The Effectiveness of Breast Cancer Bracelets

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Breast cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer in the U.S. It’s an illness that’s mostly associated with women, but men can develop breast cancer as well. Breast cancer can affect all of us, whether it affects ourselves or people that we know, so it’s an important issue that should be addressed. Fortunately, the prevalence of breast cancer has decreased in recent times and it’s relatively treatable.

One way to spread awareness of breast cancer is the distribution of breast cancer bracelets. Available for purchase at the Pink Ribbon Shop, these pretty-in-pink accessories are an easy way to show your support for the fight against breast cancer and encourage others to join in as well. The most common and well-known bracelets are the breast cancer bracelets that resemble Lance Armstrong’s LiveStrong band. Engraved with a small ribbon and words like “Share the Care” or “Survivor,” they’re made to be versatile so that you can wear them wherever you go. With these bracelets you can compliment your outfit and casually inform people about the breast cancer cause while contributing to breast cancer funds with the money you paid for them. In addition to the simple breast cancer band, there are several other breast cancer bracelets available with different patterns and made of different materials.

While it’s neat that you can be fashionable and charitable in one fell swoop, there’s a possibility that wearing breast cancer bracelets runs the risk of being more the former than the latter. For example, LiveStrong bands were made to spread awareness of cancer but at one point they became a fashion fad that was more about having the accessory everyone else had rather than supporting a cause. “Hip” ways of promoting a cause are easily accessible to the public, but they also easily lose focus of their original purpose.

This isn’t to say that breast cancer bracelets are superficial or pointless. Undoubtedly there are many breast cancer bracelet-wearing people who earnestly want to support a cause and encourage others to do the same. And even if only a few other people are inspired by them, it still makes a difference. In addition, even if some people are buying bracelets as jewelry, this doesn’t change the fact that their money helps fight against breast cancer. Whether the intent of these “supporters” is genuine or not, they contribute to the cause and every little bit counts.

The Wonderful Benefits of Exercise

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Sometimes we’re repelled by the hard work and fatigue that comes with exercise to the point where we overlook or forget all the good that it can do us. But the benefits of exercise definitely make up for the gallons of sweat, shortness of breath and painful body aches because exercise isn’t just good for the body, it’s good for the mind and your overall well-being. It’s hard to get started on a regular workout routine but once you do, it gets easier each time and you begin to see and feel the results of your efforts. It might be counterintuitive, but the more energy you put into exercising, the more energy you’ll have. You’ll find yourself sweating, panting and aching less and enjoying exercise more.

There are several physical benefits of exercise. For one, it can lower the risk of conditions like high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and diabetes. It can also help you maintain your weight so that the calories you eat don’t exceed the calories that you’re burning (or not burning). Exercise increases your energy because it gets your heart pumping and your circulatory system running, and the tissues in your body receive more nutrients and oxygen. In addition, exercise can enhance sexual activity, deepen your sleep and help you to fall asleep faster, and good sleep improves your functioning overall. Recovery is also important because your muscles are actually building up during rest, not exercise.

The physical benefits are related to the psychological benefits of exercise. Physical and psychological benefits work bidrectionally as satisfaction with the way you look and feel contributes to increased energy and mood, and vice versa. Feeling energized physically helps you to feel energized emotionally. Exercise also increases your mood because it stimulates the neurotransmitters in your brain—like Elle Woods would say, “Endorphins make people happy.” And not only does exercise work on our neurotransmitters, it also affects our brain’s neurons by increasing neurogenesis. Neurogenesis is the creation of new neurons, and more neurons in the brain can help improve learning and control stress.

Exercise can do a whole lot for you and your body, but it’s not the whole picture. The benefits of exercise should be complimented with healthy eating, especially if your goal is to lose weight. Exercise helps tone your body, but the only way to lose fat is to change your eating habits. The best formula for good health is combining the benefits of exercise with the benefits of a healthy diet.

Learn About Computer Features

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Only a few hundred years ago, very few people had technologies that they didn’t understand, or even build themselves. People understood the basic principles of a cart or a windmill enough to build and repair themselves. Times have certainly changed, right? Personally, I know very little about how television really works, nor airplanes, nor even refrigerators. We are surrounded by this complicated technology with no idea how any of it works. If you’re like me, you’ve probably grown up knowing less about computer functions than you do a rocket ship. Luckily, I found out some tricks about computer parts and accessories enough to be able to confidently know what I do and don’t need when I go to a computer store. Here are a few of my tips about computer specifications that will hopefully mean you aren’t stumped again either.

The first thing to know about computers and how they work is that they all rely on a processor. A processor is the “chip”. It is the brain of the computer and are more and more powerful. Unless you use a lot of graphics programs, like video editing or 3-D gaming or rendering, all processors in new computers will easily handle your computing needs. You really only need to know to things about computer processors: the processing speed and the RAM memory. The processing speed will be represented as something like 2.0 GHz. Even if you like watching streaming video online, you really don’t need anything faster than 2.0 GHz. The other concern is RAM memory. If a processor is like a stove top, then RAM is the number of burners you can use. Obviously, the more burners you have, the more you can cook at one time. Just like the stove, the amount of RAM you have correlates to the number of computing tasks you can do at one time. Unless you are gaming, you really don’t need very much RAM.

You also need to know about computer memory. Applications, meaning the various programs and games as well as files, such as spreadsheets, calenders, music and pictures all take up “disk space”. This number will be represented by GB, for gigabytes. The amount you need depends on the amount of files, particularly video files and games. Luckily, disk space can be added with additional drives, whether added externally or internally. The amount varies by user, so if you know about computer programs and available space, you should be fine.

Knowing about computer disk space and processors are the only two key things you need to know to purchase your computer. When you look at new copmuters, compare processing speed, RAM and disk space to make your decision and be happy with your new computer.

The Smart Way To Use Web Accounting Software

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

You can get just about anything you want on the Internet, including web accounting software which you do not download, but which you use to perform nearly every kind of accounting function a business might need. The web accounting software service may be free, or may have a cost associated with it. The software is generally dependable and consistently provides correct results, although some web accounting software may have bugs. You’ll want to choose web based accounting software services from vendors with some history and testimonials before you settle on the service. It is in the best interest of a company offering web accounting software services to provide easy to use, accounting correct software if they’re to make a profit, so you can count on most of these vendors to give careful attention to the
validity of the results its software produces.

Not all accounting functions may be suitable for online accounting software services. Most businesses are reluctant to have their financial information passing over lines which may be intercepted. They might employ a service to host accounts payables or receivables, but maintain software on their own systems to generate financial statements. Some businesses feel uneasy about storing all their financial data on one server or with one company. They may use web accounting software services for all of their accounting functions, but distribute these functions among different services. They may employ one service to handle their payroll, another to handle their receivables, and yet another to handle their payables. The general ledger may also be handled by an accounting software service and used to consolidate all their different services to get a master, centralized document. From their general journal service they may then generate their financial statements.

Your business may have most of the accounting software functions it requires, but some portion of it may not be sufficient to your needs. A payroll program, for example, may require time sheets to be entered at a single point, whereas you would like the time sheets to be automated. A tree attendance and time sheet web accounting software service enables your employees to get on the Internet, call up a page dedicated to your business, and fill out their time sheet there. These time sheets can then be downloaded into your time sheet file and the necessary calculations made. Rather than develop your own time sheet program, you save on development costs and only have to provide an Internet connect computer at your work sites to capture time sheet information.

Web accounting software is particularly useful for a small business that has a lot of payables. Some payable systems integrate with Paypal, which lets your customers bill your Paypal account. These systems take the billing information from your Paypal account and, with the funds in your account, pay your vendor. Controls are in place to prevent payment of unauthorized billing. The advantage to using this accounting software service is that you do not have to let your vendors access your system to bill you. They can access Paypal instead.

Web accounting software services are quickly becoming the preferred means of doing
accounting. If you look hard enough, you should be able to find an accounting service on the web for most of your accounting needs. If you can find a free service, you’ve saved a lot. Web accounting software service should ultimately affect your bottom line positively. In the end, it’s the bottom line that matters, at least in business accounting!

How to Kill Mold The Easy Way!

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

So you have purchased this absolutely beautiful home, you have the right amount of space for you and your growing family – finally – and everything seems to be going well until, GASP! You discover mold. There is only option, you have got to figure out how to kill mold, and how to kill mold fast. Mold is not only unpleasant and unsavory to look it, it can cause a myriad of problems related to the health of you and your family. What starts out as a simple harmless problems can quickly devolve into a health nightmare for you and the ones you love. Scary statistic? The rate of dangerous mold in houses across the country is rising, which honestly is not that surprising giving that pollution is on the rise all over the country and the world.  But what exactly does mold do that is so awful? It actually produces particles which invade our lungs and block our passages making the actual task of breathing difficult. So mold is dangerous and insidious and you have come here looking for a guide on how to kill it and we are here to provide you with all the probable answers you need.

First things first, let me be the bearer of good news! Even though mold is beyond gross and dangerous to households, especially households where people have allergies, as far as living organisms go, mold is not exactly a tough and when it comes on guides as to how to kill mold, it is easier than you may think. In fact, many household and bathroom cleaners you most likely already have on your premise will do the job just fine, but to be totally thorough you may want to consult an expert at a home good store about how to kill mold and they will probably suggest investing in higher grade biocides to be sure you have all your bases covered. For small mold areas, all that is necessary is a quick pass with a sponge and a cleanser. In more serious cases, like underneath staircases or inside walls, the entire structure may have to be removed to prevent a more serious problem. Even though killing mold is relatively easy, the problem most people find is not how to kill mold, but how to keep mold from coming back.

The secret on how to kill mold and keep it dead is to eliminate moisture at its source as this is how mold keeps returning. The problem of leaky pipes and other problem areas especially in older homes is often a main source of aggravation for people trying to banish mold for good. Sometimes it is not even as complicated as a leaky pipe. All you need to invite mold into your home is poor ventilation such as that which is typically found in attics and basements. If you want to know how to kill mold for good then it is essential you find these problems at the root, fix your home, and be sure to practice proper maintenance on your home to prevent it from coming back again.

The Influence of World Religions

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

There are many religions in the world, but some are a lot more well-known than others. Christianity is arguably the biggest religion in the world, and then the other famous religions follow: Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam are a few of the prominent religions that usually come to mind, but world religions are a lot more diverse than people might realize. And although religions seem to have been around for ages, they do change over time. Some world religions have died out for the most part—few people still worship the gods of Greek mythology. Other religions are newly created—Scientology is a fairly recently instituted system of belief. And some religions apparently endure, because it’s hard to think of a time when big religions like Christianity and Buddhism didn’t exist unless it was way, way long ago.

World religions can be a pretty controversial topic that strikes a lot of nerves. When it comes to “religion” all of the controversy tends to focus on Judeo-Christian faiths. These religions are the ones that are viewed as opposing evolution, stem cell research, abortion, gay marriage and such. Atheism is the rejection of all religious belief, but in the media it tends to be pitted against Christianity almost exclusively. Islam is also sometimes a target because of the public’s association of Islam with radical terrorists. Culture has often focused on Judeo-Christian faith in general, which could be a product of Eurocentrism. For example, in the classroom other world religions aren’t covered in depth and a working knowledge of Christian symbols and principles is a huge advantage in understanding popular literature because most of the books read in school tend to be Eurocentric as well. Why do other religions get much less exposure? One possibility is the fact that proselytizing and the rejection of other faiths are common in Judeo-Christian religions. In contrast, other religions don’t seem to actively speak out against other faiths and some even accept them.

World religions might seem very different from each other, but they do have common ties. Belief as opposed to non-belief is already a big commonality, but there are some who would say that it runs deeper than that. For example, the famous story of the flood in Christianity is an element found in Greek mythology and even earlier than that in Sumerian religion. This is a concept that would bring world religions together and ironically tear people apart because the world allows for many different points of view and yet they can’t logically all be true. This conundrum isn’t going to be resolved anytime soon, but one thing is for certain—there are many religions in this world and some of them will always have more influence than others.

Pumpkins For Halloween

Monday, September 28th, 2009

If you are into seasonal decorations, you already know what you like to use for each time of the year. You may have a stash of items that you get out as you need them, and you use them year after year. After a while, however, you may get tired of the same old things and want to go out and buy something new. If you have not shopped for decorations lately, you may have no idea how great things have gotten in the past decade. If you want to go about decorating with pumpkins for Halloween, you have some great options out there.

When you go out to shop, with decorating with pumpkins in mind, you have more options than you could possibly use. You can find big, small, and medium sized pumpkins, and you can find them in all colors, though orange is obviously the most common color in production no matter where you buy your decorations. You can find things that go in your house or you can find items for decorating with pumpkins outside if that is what you want to do. If you can imagine it, you can probably find it if you know where to look. Search online and search locally, the variety is bigger than you think.

When it comes to decorating with pumpkins in the house, you want to make sure you do not go overboard, but there are many great ideas that you can use. One of the most common is to have a centerpiece on your table with features pumpkins. What is great about this is that you can make your centerpiece for fall and Thanksgiving, but then just give it a twist for a few weeks to make it for Halloween. You could add some spider webs or perhaps a few spiders and anything else that reminds you of Halloween. Once the day has passed, you can then take them off and you have your Thanksgiving centerpiece all ready to go.

You can use pumpkins for decorations all throughout the rest of your home as well. You may want to keep it simple or it will be overwhelming. In fact, other than a few choice items, you may want to keep decorating with pumpkins to a minimum at all times other than right around Halloween. You can have a few things around for Thanksgiving, but it is not as common to decorate for this. Halloween is the best time to use your imagination for decorating with pumpkins. Once Halloween has passed, tone it down just a bit.

Decorating with pumpkins outside does not have quite as many restrictions, though you probably only want to do it around the fall and the holidays. You can find great pumpkins that you can use outside, just make sure anything light has been weighed down. You can find some great blow up lawn ornaments that feature pumpkins that you can use for Halloween. These are varied, but pumpkins are very common if you find them in the stores. Don’t forget to look online for a huge selection of pumpkins but decorations as well.

Save Big With Bulk Party Supplies

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

I just read that the cost of raising a child from birth to the age of 17 costs more than a quarter of a million dollars. And that doesn’t even include college tuition, which can easily run another $80,000 to $100,000. I find those numbers to be absolutely mind-boggling — especially since I have five kids in the house. I suppose this would be a lot easier if I were a millionaire, but as things stand, I’ve got to try to scrimp and save any way I can to stretch my dollars as far as they will possibly go. For instance, I buy only bulk party supplies, groceries, and toiletries, which does wonders for my budget.

With this many children around, it feels like we’re always getting ready for parties of some kind or other. Birthdays are of course the biggest occasions and since we have one every other month on average, I simply purchase bulk party supplies and keep them stored away until required. There’s no sense in buying new streamers, bunting, gift bags, wrapping paper, noisemakers, and hats for each get-together when I can purchase larger quantities that work out to a fraction of the retail price. Sure, sometimes my boys and girls grumble about not being able to have the latest Disney character plastered across their paper cake plates, but they soon get over it. Now I just order bulk party supplies once a year from a wholesale website and I’m set for another round of birthdays, Halloween, and Christmas.

The same principle holds true for regular groceries as well. Just as buying bulk party supplies is cheaper in the long run than purchasing the very same items in smaller quantities, purchasing certain grocery products by the case can save me a bundle over time. For instance, we go through lots of soup, bread, ketchup, potato chips, juice, cereal, and vitamins in this house, and I would be broke in no time if I had to pay the full retail price for everything. But by signing up for a membership at one of those wholesale shopping clubs, I’m able to save big while keeping good food on the table.

And don’t even get me started on toiletries such as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste! I have to replace these items so frequently that I sometimes feel as though I’m running a hotel instead of a household. But fortunately, the same places that sell bulk party supplies and groceries also offer massive containers of common toiletry items that not only last longer but also take less of a bite out of my wallet.

As the cost of raising a family in the modern world continues to rise, the only thing parents can do is look for good ways to save money on items you use all the time. Take it from me: buying bulk party supplies, groceries, and toiletries definitely makes a huge difference in my family’s bottom line — and can help you get more for your money as well.

Asian Plastic Surgery

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

In terms of procedure and price, Asian plastic surgery has an unofficial reputation of being the best plastic surgery around. People travel to Asia just to get procedures done because it’s cheap as well as high-quality, two traits that don’t always go hand-in-hand. Plastic surgery is a booming business in Asia, and even doctors untrained in plastic surgery procedures are trying to break into it. Unfortunately, this can result in risky, botched operations performed by unlicensed “professionals.” However, on the whole Asian plastic surgery is held in high-regard and continues to prosper as an industry.

Asian plastic surgery as a type of surgery is largely defined by the “double eyelid surgery,” medically known as “blepharoplasty.” Double-eyelids are considered attractive in Asia, possibly because eyes with double eyelids tend to look bigger. If you look at pictures of Asian celebrities, chances are that they possess this coveted feature. Opponents of plastic surgery and double eyelid surgery specifically criticize patients who undergo the operation for wanting to “be white” and selling out to a Western ideal of beauty, and this remains a point of contention. It’s possible that some individuals are influenced to get double eyelid surgery by growing up in an environment where they were made to believe that smaller eyes are undesirable. However, most of them would deny trying to “be white.” It’s important to consider that “looking white” and “being white” are two different things. The Asian standard for attractive eyes might be influenced by Western culture, but it doesn’t necessarily have to do with wanting to be a member of that culture. In any case, many people still opt for Asian plastic surgery and there will be many more to come, critics lament. The Asian plastic surgery industry doesn’t show any signs of opening its eyes.

Despite its growing popularity, plastic surgery still retains some stigma, because going under the knife is commonly seen as inferior to being born with natural beauty. Some plastic surgery patients will destroy their old pictures post-operation to erase the past. Nevertheless, plastic surgery is becoming less of a taboo to mention openly, and it might just as well be—how would you explain your eyes magically doubling in a matter of weeks? Asian plastic surgery in particular is becoming increasingly accepted and desired. Recent polls show that more and more Asians see plastic surgery as acceptable and even necessary, pointing out that appearance is important and perhaps crucial to success. The fact remains that whether getting plastic surgery is “right” or not, appearance does and will always matter in society, and maybe plastic surgery will eventually be viewed as just another cosmetic enhancement like makeup or hair extensions. At the same time, it’s hard to believe that natural beauty will ever cease to be appreciated.

Back To School Supplies

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

One of the ongoing rituals that signify the end of summer is taking your kids shopping for back to school supplies. Although this might strike a chord of fear in the young ones, helping them be prepared and organized for the new school year will go along way towards setting the tone for a positive learning experience.

Depending on your child’s teachers and school set up, you might be able to get an advance list of back to school supplies weeks before the first day. This will enable you to get the shopping done and out of the way allowing you then to cope with other matters with regard to getting the kids ready. If you haven’t receive a list, contact the school to see if one is available.

Even though a basic list of back to school supplies could be provided in advance, there might be other necessary items needed that you won’t know until that first day of school. It’s important not to let this shopping list fall by the wayside in the excitement of returning to school. In other words, you don’t want to wake up on the second day of school with your kid in a panic because they need crayons! Make sure you set aside some time in your schedule on that first day to allow for any potential back to school supply shopping.

If you aren’t given a specific list, there is always a standard set of back to school supplies that every kid will need. These include something to write with, something to write on and something to keep together whatever you’ve written. Pens and pencils are simple enough but make sure your kid also has a pencil sharpener to avoid any excuses! They should also have a certain amount of paper notebooks and binders. Buying these in bulk at office supply stores could help lower the cost of your back to school supplies.

And no matter which type of back to school supplies you get for your student they’re going to need something to carry it around in. Backpacks are now an essential tool for any kid. Make sure that your young one is in on the decision of which backpack is best for them. Just like shoes, they should try out the packs in the store to see how they feel on their back and how easy it is to adjust the straps. You don’t want your child falling over or getting a back strain because of the wrong pack.

The most significant thing about buying back to school supplies is that the kids are actually going back to school! This means a much deserved break for you!
