Applying to College

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Applying to college can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be, as long as you have a plan. With a little organization and effort, you can get through the application process smoothly and increase your chances of acceptance to the school or schools of your choice.

Before you even begin the process of actually applying to college, you must take a moment to consider what you want out of your college experience. Is there a particular subject you wish to study, or a particular career path you have your heart set upon? Do you prefer a small, intimate university setting in which you’ll enjoy plenty of one-on-one attention and won’t just be a face in the crowd? Or would you rather attend a larger school with a little more anonymity? Also, how important is location to you? These are all questions that must be carefully pondered before you begin applying to college.

Once you’ve decided what you’re looking for, you’ll have to do some research. Find out which colleges will meet your academic, social and geographic needs. There are many resources available to you, from magazine rankings to websites. Don’t be afraid to call the admissions office of a school you’re interested in. Tell them you’re considering applying to college, and they will send you brochures and course catalogues to give you more information about their institution.

After deciding where exactly you wish to apply, the next step is to gather together the materials you’ll need. Most college applications are essentially the same. When you apply to college, you’ll certainly need copies of your high school transcript. Almost all universities will require one or two letters of recommendation. Let your favorite high school teachers, coaches and guidance counselors know in advance that you’re applying to college and will need their help. Most will be happy to write a recommendation letter, if you ask nicely.

Colleges can tell a great deal about your academic achievement from grades, SAT scores and recommendations. But they can’t tell much about you as an individual. When applying to college, the real challenge is in making your application stand out from the pack. You want to be noticed, to be memorable to those college admissions officers. You want to paint a picture of yourself as a fully-rounded person. That’s where your college admissions essay can really make or break your application. Take the time to write an essay that is personal, individual and distinctive.

With a little planning, some research and a lot of care, applying to college doesn’t have to be an intimidating prospect. Plan ahead, take your time, and do it right.

What Does an Apartment Locator Actually Do?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

For most people, when you look to move into a new property or apartment, you will have some idea of the area, the type of property or at least the type of property you don’t want to move to, but the problem for most people is wading through the tons and tons of ads for the different rental companies and property owners that are out there – that’s where an apartment locator comes in to play.

The basic premise for a property locator is as a service to those of us looking for a property, that may not have either the time or experience to get the facts that we need to make an informed opinion on whether or not we want to move there. The apartment locator’s job is gather the details and facts about these properties for you, present them to you in a timely fashion, and allow you to make an informed opinion on where you want to go to. Seems simple and easy, doesn’t it? Well yes and no, as there are a lot of other factors that have to be taken into account before you can get to the ‘let’s go see the apartment’ stage.

Most apartment locators work in networks – a network of leads (people looking), a network of providers (companies and people with properties to rent) all of which look for the attention of the locator in order for them to gain clients and make money. Most locators work on commissions paid from the apartment complex’s and renters themselves, so the service is predominantly free to those looking, but that’s not always the case, and certainly not these days. Some complex’s look for minimum 2 years on the job, some look for credit checks and some look for employment verification. All of these can be a pain in the neck for someone to provide, and can cost some money, but again – this is where your apartment locator service comes into play, so instead of you dealing with four or five different companies you simply fill in the one application and then let them sort it out, according to your specifications.

Bottom line here is that apartment locators do a necessary function in today’s society, while opening up an avenue for the rest of us to enjoy our down time without the hassle’s of finding what we want ourselves.

Do anti cellulite treatments actually work?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Cellulite is regarded as the scourge of a modern woman. Fortunately, there does not seem to be an end to the many anti cellulite treatment options. Open any women’s magazine and you will be hit with ads for anti cellulite treatment that promise that cheese-looking skin. Well, do these treatment options actually work? Many of them tout retinol, caffeine and anti-oxidants which they claim are the ingredients that help to reduce cellulite appearance. Cellulite is not only a problem for women with excess weight and those who do not exercise. The problem seems to affect even thin women and its appearance can begin quite early during adolescence. According to one survey, more than 70 percent of all women have cellulite with more women being prone to it than men.

So what anti cellulite treatment options are available out there? One of the options available is treatments given at the spas. Here, it is all about massaging and trying to suction out the culprits. Another option that seems to be getting a lot of popularity is anti-cellulite creams. While creams do not claim that they can completely eliminate cellulite they do however admit that they can help to improve the appearance of cellulite. As you can imagine, one of the ingredients in almost all anti cellulite treatment creams is caffeine. This is because caffeine improves blood flow to the skin and as a result acts as a diuretic and in the process flushes you out.

Retinol, another ingredient, penetrates the skin, exfoliates it and leads to more production of collagen. Collagen helps to make the skin thicker and in the process helps to hide the dimpling fat. In fact the challenge with most anti cellulite treatment creams is not so much as to whether they will work but rather how much of it is needed to produce the desired effects. Too much of the cream can lead to the drying of the skin and in the process lead to other effects like reddening and peeling off.

Other anti cellulite treatment alternatives includes laser treatments and liposuction. In laser treatment, a laser is used at the infradermic level to massage the skin getting rid of cellulite pockets on the skin. In liposuction, fat is sucked out of the body. It is highly recommended for the removal of deep fat. It has to be realized however that there is no way of totally getting rid of cellulite without a drastic lifestyle change. However some of the above anti cellulite treatment options can help to improve the look of it.

Alzheimer’s Disease Symptoms

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Alzheimer’s Disease is a common form of dementia that can be devastating to someone progressing through the stages of it and to loved ones who have to witness the degeneration of their mental faculties. Alzheimer’s Disease affects all of us, from close family and friends to strangers and famous figures like Ronald Reagan. While Alzheimer’s is an incurable disease and there are no treatments known to stop its progression, it’s important to know how to detect it early on.

All of us experience faulty memory and general malfunctions in our thinking every now and then, but the symptoms of Alzheimer’s exhibit this to such a degree that it interferes with daily living. Alzheimer’s Disease symptoms include poor retention of recently acquired knowledge, problems with developing or following plans, forgetting how to do simple daily tasks, confusion about time and location, trouble with visual and spatial perception, losing language ability, misplacing things and being unable to retrace steps, seriously poor judgment, withdrawal and significant changes in disposition. It’s normal to have occasional incidents that are reminiscent of these symptoms, but they’re more likely to be Alzheimer’s Disease symptoms when a generally older individual can’t live their life the way they used to because of excessive forgetfulness or impaired thinking.

If you or someone in your life appears to exhibit Alzheimer’s Disease symptoms, getting checked out right away can help patients plan better for the future. One way to alleviate symptoms involves medication that helps brain functioning by boosting levels of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter associated with memory or inhibiting glutamate, a chemical that over-actively controls the amount of substances that enter brain nerve cells in Alzheimer’s patients. Other than medicine, usually Alzheimer’s Disease is ‘treated’ by making sure that patients engage in an active lifestyle with a healthy diet and social relationships. Alzheimer’s patients can also get a head start on dealing with things like financial issues and housing and care services so that they and their loved ones will be provided for.

Even if the condition is untreatable, it’s possible to relieve Alzheimer’s Disease symptoms to provide a better quality of life for patients and the people in their lives. After all, we should all make the best of the time that we have, and sometimes things happen in life to make us more aware of that fact. And sometimes things happen that allow us to enjoy life a little longer-clinical studies are currently being conducted and there might be a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease one day.

Aloe Vera Acne Treatment

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Before you rush out to the store and spend big bucks on acne treatment, make sure you try one of the oldest and most effective all-natural therapies out there: aloe vera acne treatment. Aloe vera is a plant which contains a natural gel inside the leaves. Aloe vera gel has been used for centuries to treat burns, rashes and other skin irritation.

All you need for aloe vera acne therapy is pure aloe vera gel. The best way to get aloe vera gel is to have an aloe vera plant in your house. Then you can simply break off the leaves and squeeze out the gel that is inside. Alternatively, you can also buy aloe vera gel at health food or natural nutrition stores. Be careful, though. You want to find a product that is pure, 100% aloe vera gel, not mixed with any artificial ingredients or chemicals.

Application of aloe vera acne treatment is really easy. Simply apply the aloe vera gel to your face (or wherever you have acne) after washing. Apply the gel liberally. Many users of aloe vera acne treatment apply the gel right before bed. You can also wash your skin with aloe vera juice and moisturize daily with a product containing aloe vera. The actual pulp of the aloe vera plant also makes an excellent skin cleanser.

You may begin to see results after a few weeks of using aloe vera to treat your acne. Continue the aloe vera acne treatment for sixth months or longer for maximum effect. You will see a reduction in redness and swelling. You should experience fewer breakouts. Also aloe vera treatment will help reduce redness and scars from previous acne. Overall, you will find your skin looking clear, soft and supple.

The best thing about this aloe vera acne approach is that it’s all natural. There are no harsh chemicals to irritate your skin or harm the environment. In fact, if you own your own aloe vera plant, you can avoid buying wasteful packaging which is bad for the environment. Truly, aloe vera acne treatment is quite possibly the most ‘green’ acne remedy around!

Just remember that aloe vera is not a cure for acne. In reality, nothing applied topically can actually cure acne. Aloe vera can treat your acne and take care of your skin. It’s natural and affordable, and best of all – it works!

Activities for African American History Month

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

African American history month presents teachers and parents with a wonderful opportunity to engage children on the topic of Black history. By no means does this require a dry recitation of the facts of African American history, nor a dull review of the same tired topics. On the contrary, African American history month is rich with possibilities for fun, hands-on, creative activities which will really involve children’s interest even as they educate.

Black history related activities can cross the curricular spectrum and be integrated into every subject area (not just history).

In Science, students can incorporate African American history month themes by studying important African American scientists from Benjamin Banneker to Mae Jemison. Of course they can learn all about George Washington Carver by making their own peanut butter, which they can also eat.

In English Language Arts, students can compose any number of inspired writing projects, including pop-up book biographies, letters to Black heroes, or imaginary interviews with African American achievers. A fun idea is to have an African American History Month biography fair, during which each student gets to dress up as one famous black achiever.

In reading, consider a read-aloud or whole class novel which brings out the personal, emotional aspects of African American history month. ‘Bud, Not Buddy’ by Christopher Paul Curtis tells the story of the Great Depression through the eyes of a young African American boy. ‘The Other Side’ by Jacqueline Woodson is a picture book about friendship and prejudice which can appeal to younger or older children, and lead to very rich and thoughtful group discussions.

African American history month also provides a wealth of opportunities for art, music and drama projects. Students can draw or paint scenes of important moments in African American history. They can act out plays. They can play music composed by African American musicians. Black history month is a great time to have a Black arts celebration.

Finally, of course, there’s History class. African American history can come alive for students through group activities and projects. Consider working together as a class to compose a giant timeline of Black history. The timeline can cover an entire wall – or multiple walls – of the classroom, and include photographs, illustrations and artifacts.

Really, there is no end to the amusement and creativity students can enjoy during African American history month. With a little imagination, activities can be incorporated throughout the school day and in every subject area. So have fun!

Alice wonderland costumes for Halloween 2009

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Alice In Wonderland remains not only my favorite Disney film, but one of my favorite pieces of satire in the history of english language literature. And it’s not just me – millions appreciate Lewis Carroll’s masterwork to be a true triumph of both art and subversion, and it remains as popular with kids and adults today as it was a century ago.

As a result, alice wonderland costumes are some of the most popular both any and every halloween, not just for halloween 2009. Whether you want to dress up like Alice herself, or the Queen of Hearts, or the always-popular Cheshire Cat, or the hooka-smoking caterpillar, you have a litany of choices that no other story can provide.

Personally I think the best of the alice wonderland costumes is the Dormouse. He’s the forgotten one at Alice’s tea party, which features The Mad Hatter, The March Hare, Alice and the forgotten Dormouse. He’s a small, nearly silent, drunk. It’s the perfect role to play at a Halloween party if you’re so inclined, and easy costume to do, and if you can convince your other friends to go as the other characters, more’s the better. As in the film and book, you can even have someone go as the table (which itself was alive in Carroll’s story.)

The fun part about alice wonderland costumes is that they can work as subversion on several levels, the first being that which Carroll originally intended. But it’s also worth remember that Alice In Wonderland herself is now a symbol of purity and innocence in a culture gone awry with sexuality; thus, Sexy Alice In Wonderland is a very popular costume today for young women. There’s something absolutely delightful about making something as wholesome as a disney cartoon into an exhibition for the very basest of impulses which Walt Disney himself abhorred. One suspects that Carroll would approve of the decision.

Of course, the other characters are even more fun. The Mad Hatter is probably the best of the alice wonderland costumes (my love for the Dormouse notwithstanding) because he’s so recognizable and fun. Remember the riddle he poses to Alice, Why is a raven like a writing desk? It’s meant to be unsolveable, and if you’re really willing to get into character and give it a go you can just talk gibberish all night and win plaudits for it. Sounds like a great costume idea to me!

What are airline deals, and where can I find them?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Whenever you visit somewhere these days, it’s probable that you’re going to take an airplane there, be it near or far, and at some point your going to book and purchase a flight. What a lot of people don’t know, or aren’t bothered about, is that there are tons of different ways to get discounts and airline deals for just about anywhere you could care to mention. Here’s a couple of obvious ways to make those deals, and save some spending money at the same time.

Book at least 2 weeks in advance, especially for domestic flights, as the closer you get to the date for flying the higher the prices are and the harder it is to find any airline deals. Couple this with the little known fact that airlines usually will try and undercut the competition at specific times each day – 10 am, 12.30 pm and 4.00 pm, apart from the weekend, only once per day on the weekends after 5.00 Saturday). So, search about 3 to 4 hours after these times, as it will take that long for the pricing to get to the engines, and you’ll probably be able to pick up a lower priced deal even if you are flying at a moment’s notice. For international flights, the same applies except even more so – the further out you can buy the better, and depending on where you are going you may be able to pick up some excellent deals on fly/drive programs too.

Where and when possible, travel at off times of the week, Saturday included, to get pricing breaks. Friday and Sunday are the most traveled days, so if you can work your schedule around so that you’re not traveling on those 2 main days then you should be able to pick up a deal for wherever you’re going.

Start your search with the airline websites themselves. As mentioned several times during the week airlines do deals first on their own sites, then filtering thru to other sites that list the deals. Another reason for this is that sometimes airlines have ‘private’ deals, available only through their own sites, so that the airline deals won’t show up on the search engines until much later, if at all.
Add all these to the fact that there’s a little known thing called a ‘guaranteed airfare policy’ which basically states that if they sell other tickets for less after you bought your ticket, they have to refund/credit the difference to you. So have fun!

A Review of Air Conditioners

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

With so many companies after your heating and cooling dollars, it can be difficult not to be on the loosing edge. Companies will do almost anything to make sure they make a sale and in the process, you may find yourself right in the middle, probably on the wrong side of the air conditioning business. Fortunately, there is a tool that can help you to make an informed decision before you even go out and start on your shopping. These are air conditioner review blogs and web pages.

As with all other products and services, using reviews to find out about a company’s products and services is one of the best ways to find reliable unbiased information. Consumer recommendations have been shown to significantly affect how people make decisions as to what to buy and not what to buy. When doing an air conditioner review, there are a number of factors to consider too. One of these is the review location. With many companies realizing the impact that social media and online reviews have on consumer behavior, some will go to great lengths to ensure that blog reviews, usually under their domains have as much positive criticism as possible. These reviews are often unreliable and will therefore not be of any real to a shopper. Use open blogs that are independent of the company in question and get to see what others say about their products.

When doing an air conditioner review, look at what the company website has to say about their products. You will usually find invaluable information about the product features and an overview of the details will usually be beneficial. Compare with what other companies have to say about their products and then look at what users have to say about these products. One of the things you should not overlook during an air conditioner review is the seer rating or how well the unit runs compared to its cost. Look at the standards mandated and how the air conditioner conforms to them. See if the refrigerant requirements are eco-friendly and or if they are outdated or about to be phased out.

During an air conditioner review, it is good to review as many units as possible in order to determine which best fits your needs. Research is essential. Careful research is vital if you want to get a unit that truly matches your energy needs and square footage. Air conditioner review blogs and company product information will go a long way in making this possible.

Home buying guide

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

There comes a point in our adult lives that we realize the truth about renting. It stinks! Suddenly it hits us that we’re chucking loads of cash out the window for what seemed like a home, but was really nothing more than a hotel room. What a waste of our hard-earned dollars! So now that we’ve come to our senses, we decide to begin the search for a real home. One that we actually get to keep and watch appreciate over the years. Most call this an investment. It’s not just about having a real place to enjoy life, but it’s about making money in the future if you should decide to sell. However, not all real estate will fall in your price range. You’re searching for affordable houses that fill the wants and needs of you and your family. Therefore the best place to start is on your laptop.

Do a little brainstorming before checking the current real estate listings. This way you’ll get a true idea of what price range you can expect when browsing for affordable houses. Write down the basics. One story or two? How many full bathrooms? How many bedrooms? How much overall living space is desired? And how large of a lot are you wanting? These will all play a role in that final price tag. Then there’s the area. This is likely the most crucial factor when seeking out affordable houses. Some areas such as San Francisco and Manhattan are going to be sky-high no matter what size home you’re after. The popularity and amenities have made certain locations practically unaffordable for most of us.

If you already know what area you wish to shop for affordable houses in, then it’s time to get started. Pull up websites such as REMAX.com, HUDforeclosed.com, and affordablehousingonline.com. These search engines/websites will assist you in finding the right affordable houses in the desired area. As a rule of thumb, you should remember that the closer you get to a large city, the higher priced the homes will be. This is simply a given. Millions of people flock to the most urbanized areas for amenities, arts and diverse culture. Good luck finding the home of your dreams! Surely there is one that suits you perfectly.
