Gypsy costumes

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Looking for an easy Halloween costume that’s loaded with a flair for the romanticist? A gypsy costume is your answer!

So many girls are simply born with romantic ideals and are drawn to images of the ladies of past centuries, who seem to embody their fantasies of a more perfect world. The gypsy women were of a nomadic and adventurous spirit, known for their clothing in vibrant colors, well adorned with costume jewelry, flowing hair and a somewhat reckless abandon for a free existence, marked with lots of music and dancing, along with their own sense of fashion. Gypsy women were trend setters, not fashion slaves. If you’re scratching your head for Halloween costume ideas for your girl, the gypsy costume is certainly worth a mention. If she has just a couple of ounces of that romantic idealism, you might find that the idea of the gypsy costume ignites her imagination.

To spark some interest and gather some ideas, try doing a Google image search on ‘gypsy costumes’. Select several of the most exciting examples and print them out. Putting together a stunning gypsy costume is one of the easiest of homemade Halloween costumes, yet has the greatest panache.

Your basic costume begins with a peasant styled blouse and a bright skirt. The peasant blouses are currently in fashion, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a plain top. You can check out the thrift and retro shops for some good finds. The retro shops often have a stock of elaborate petticoats from the 1950s. All you need is a box of dye to turn that petticoat into an authentic gypsy costume piece. The brighter, the better. Purple, magenta, red, aquamarine or yellow.

Now you’ve got your basic costume. It’s time to accerorize and create the magic. Scarves and more scarves are essential components of the successful gypsy costume. Scarves may be used as headbands, belts or arm, wrist and ankle decorations. Plain or patterned, this accessory adds punch to your costume effect. Use scarves liberally!

As for jewelry, a number of bangle bracelets and perhaps (depending on the age of your gypsy), a pair of outrageous earrings are in order. Look for concho belts in the costume jewelry section to add some of that adventurous spirit to your gypsy costume.

Castanets are another excellent accessory, both inexpensive and easy to find. Cha-cha-cha!

If your little gypsy has short hair, there’s nothing like a long and flowing Halloween wig to give your gypsy the authentic look. Get a couple of sturdy hair combs, embellished with faux diamonds, to create the genuine look of the romantic Gypsy, whiling away her time in dance, music, adventure and beautiful garb.

You can see that, for just a few dollars, you can create a gypsy costume that will live on in your child’s memory for years to come. Ah, to be a child again.

Group Halloween Costumes

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

What could be more fun than dressing up in a group Halloween costumes with all your friends? Naturally the best way to show off a group Halloween costume would be at a parade or Halloween festival. But even making the rounds of a couple of parties in group Halloween costumes can be a great way to spend the holiday.

The first thing to think of for any type of group Halloween costumes would be your theme. What does your group of friends all have assessable to wear? If you all work in a hospital, wearing scrubs would be an easy idea. Splash them with some red food coloring and tell everyone that you all just got off work. That’s sure to raise a few eyebrows! You could also simply dress everyone in Hawaiian shirts and go as ‘Jimmy Buffet Parrot Heads.’ Or maybe have everyone wearing tie-dyed shirts and going as ‘Grateful Dead Dead Heads.’ Depending on how many people are in your group you could all wear puffy shirts and matching polyester pants and go as the ‘Partridge Family.’ Those are just a few possible musical theme group Halloween costume ideas.

Other group Halloween costumes are wearing reflective work crew vests and have everyone carry around a trash bag and go as ‘community service road crew.’ If you really want a challenge you can all wear prison jumpsuits, chain your ankles together and go as a ‘chain gain.’ Or wear the same prisoner garb without the chains but splash some mud on and go as ‘escaped prison gang.’ Keeping up the corrections theme, you could have a couple of your group dressed as prison guards to complete the effect.

Another group Halloween costume would be to adapt what would be considered a traditional group for your friends. For instance you can all dress up in the same tight fitting pink ballerina outfits and go as the ‘Chorus of Swan Lake.’ This could be especially fun for the male members of your troop! You can go retro by dressing up as ‘The Village People.’ It would be easy to do a new version of the Mickey Mouse Club. You just need to have everyone get a pair of Mouse Ears and sweatshirt with their names printed across. These can be your real nicknames or you can get very creative.

The thing to keep in mind with group Halloween costumes is to have fun. This is usually a two part party: the first part is planning the group costume and the second is in the execution. Just be sure to take plenty of pictures!

Finding Great Group Costume Ideas

Friday, November 27th, 2009

One of the best Halloweens I have been a part of happened six years ago, when I was still in college. Some friends and I journeyed to a small college town where a friend of ours was attending school. We decided that, since we would not know very many people, nor did any of us want to be separated, we should all dress as the same thing, or at least all dress up around one single theme. Little did I know that as far as group costume ideas, ours was excellent.

Why are group costume ideas so good? Well, as I mentioned before, they are great for a group of people that are new, out of town, or worried, for whatever the reason, of being separated or lost. A quick scan of the room will reveal when several people are all wearing the same costume.

So what makes great group costume ideas, and what makes a bad group costume idea? Well, as a simple rule, there really are no bad group costume ideas. Any costume really does get better if there is more than one of them. However, there are some group costume ideas that are better than others. Here are some of my suggestions.

Personally, my favorite group costume ideas are ones that play on inanimate objects. I don’t think you can do much better than having a group of five or more people all running around dressed up as an apple. One apple alone is not nearly as much fun or funny as two, and so on and so on. You can obviously parlay that into all dressing up as a different piece of produce if you like, but I prefer a huge group all dressed up as one thing.

For this reason, you probably want your group costume ideas to be a rather pedestrian and boring idea. Why? Because that ensures that no one else will accidentally also dress up as it and somehow get some of the credit as well.

As for my great group costume idea that I mentioned above? I do not want to share that with you now, for the sixth year in a row, a group of us plan on dressing up like it again and I would not want to ruin it for us. Needless to say, that great group costume ideas can start a great tradition and are, obviously a lot of fun.

Gross Candy

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Mention Halloween to most folks and they’ll conjure up images ghosts, goblins, zombies and vampires. Throw in some Jack-o-lanterns, haunted houses, bats and witches and you’ve get the idea. But ca you really complete the Halloween picture without the mention of candy? After all isn’t trick or treating for candy how we all started celebrating Halloween? There are literally hundreds of candies available to fill up any little ghoul’s pumpkin but for a really extreme Halloween, you need to track down some gross candy to really set the mood.

As the title implies, any gross candy would be the type of sweets that elicit a specific response. Namely, you want anyone seeing you eat gross candy to go ‘Ewwww! Gross!’ That’s very easy to achieve with the Harry Potter inspired ‘Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans.’ Mixed in with traditional and sweet tasting jelly beans are the grosser flavors are rotten egg, vomit, grass, ear wax and soap. No kidding! You scoop up a handful of Bertie Bott’s at your own risk. Harry Potter has also inspired ‘Cockroach Clusters’ which are gross candy shaped and colored like a real cockroach with a gooey center and crunchy outside. Totally yuck.

There are also some ‘bodily’ gross candy like ‘Ear Wax Candy’ which is an ear shaped dispenser that you dip a q-tip like stick into for some gooey goodness. Then there is ‘Lick Your Wound’ gross candy which is a band-aid with sweets that you would lick right off your body. And what gross candy collection would be complete without ‘Hose Nose.’ This is a huge plastic nose that you attach to your face and dispenses slimy sweets from the ‘nostrils’ that you can catch right on your tongue. Talk about gross!

Gross candy can also mean candy that looks like something you shouldn’t be eating like a can of white chocolate maggots. Or sour powder you dip out of a tiny plastic toilet. There is even a variety of baby poo looking chocolates. And if you really want to get gross with your candy you can consider lollipop encased bugs. You can find real creepy crawlers like worms, crickets and scorpions surrounded by a traditional lollipop. These could best be described as Fear Factor gross candy. Do you have what it takes to lick down to the bug?

Want to get into college? It’s easier than you think

Friday, November 27th, 2009

When the economy is bad, with unemployment at its peak, many people think this is the time to get into college and wonder if they can. The answer depends on your interest, aptitudes, academic qualifications, and financial situation. Taken together, these considerations may suggest that you attend either a four year college, a junior college or a vocational one.

Four year degree colleges generally offer a bachelors degree in science or arts, a BS, or a BA. On the science side, the subjects offered are the traditional ones, physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology, engineering, computer science, and mathematics. Humanities, art, literature, drama, languages, music and philosophy comprise the arts. Social science, such as psychology, sociology or anthropology may come under either science or arts, depending on the emphasis. If you’ve shown an aptitude in any of these, and you have a GED or a high school diploma with an average grade of C or higher, you may be qualified to get into a college that offers four year degree programs. These colleges are also the ones that have the highest tuition fees. If you’re unemployed and haven’t much savings, you may still be able to pay the cost of a four year degree through grants, loans, scholarships and work-study programs. Many people have worked their way through college on a part time job.

You can still get into college if a four year college is too expensive now. Many people who are interested in a four year degree, but are simply unable to afford the expense, will opt to go to a Junior College for the first two years of a four year degree. These institutions offer two year degrees, associate degrees, in science and arts, an AS or AA degree. They cover the same general courses in your major study as a four year college, and most four year colleges and universities accept the credits you earn there, applying these to your four year program. Junior college entrance requirements are generally less strict than four year institutions, and some charge nothing or a significant amount less for tuition than the traditional four year colleges.

Not interested in the traditional academic fare? Interested in something targeted to prepare you for a career that doesn’t require a BA, BS, AS or AA, but instead of these, a certificate? Get into college at the junior level. Most junior colleges and many senior colleges offer certificates for vocational training in such fields as computer programming, office management, medical assistance, even automotive repair. The programs can last from six months to two years, but at the end, you’ll have a certificate or degree that will open the door to new employment and a new career. The cost will be about the same as that for a student attending junior college with an intention to go on to a senior one, but you’ll be recovering your expense years earlier than someone who goes on to finish the last two years. Most junior colleges are able to provide you with financial aid.

You can also get into college if you’re looking for one totally emphasizing vocational training. Vocational colleges offer certificate studies in the same areas as many junior colleges, in computer programming, computer repair, automotive engineering, office management, legal aid – in nearly every vocation there is. These institutions are not hard to get into, but they may charge as much as a four year institution. Most, however, will cost less than a four year college and more than a junior college. Some vocational colleges provide financial aid, depending on their accreditation.

Whether a four year college, a junior college, or a vocational college, if you’re looking for a new career in this tumultuous economy, you can get into college if you have the interest, aptitude, academic qualifications and some means of paying your tuition. Look up colleges on the Internet and see if there are grants or scholarships among the thousands out there that is right for you!

Genetic Diseases: Predispositions and Predestination

Friday, November 27th, 2009

The human race is full of a lot of genetic diversity, but along with genetic diversity comes a vast array of genetic diseases. These genetic diseases can range from relatively benign conditions to more serious illnesses. We can’t choose what genes we get, and whether we can do anything about the effects of our genetic makeup depends on what we’re dealing with.

Some genetic diseases are a nuisance to live with, but manageable. Eczema can be uncomfortable and painful at times, and even though there’s no cure there are topical treatments available to relieve the symptoms. Other genetic diseases can be prevented from developing as long as proper measures are taken. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a condition in which people can’t eat things that have phenylalanine in them, which is related to foods with protein. Having a low-phenylalanine diet can largely prevent mental retardation and brain damage from developing. Then there are other diseases that are terminal and fatal. Cystic fibrosis (CF), a disease that clogs the lungs and digestive system usually results in death at a young age.

Genetic diseases can be controversial because they bring up many ethical issues. For one, should fetuses that are genetically destined to develop a fatal disease be given the chance to live? Some would see abortion as merciful, and others would see it as murder. This leads to the issue of stem cell research. Stem cell research could potentially prevent genetic diseases, but some see this as killing human life. It’s difficult to determine whether a fetus counts as a human life. On one hand, a fetus is not equivalent to a human being, but on the other hand it grows up to be one.

The possibility of curing or preventing genetic diseases brings us to another issue-the future of genetic engineering. It seems like a good idea to rid the human race of any affliction. But if we get to the point where we can alter our genetic predispositions to disease, what’s to stop us from changing other features like talent and physical attractiveness? There could be a slippery slope from genetically engineering your health down to genetically engineering who you are.

There’s something ethical about preventing genetic diseases, yet there might be something unethical about the predestination of human life in general. Part of human life is the power (or illusion) of choice, and changing our genetics takes that away, even if it’s for a good cause. There aren’t any clear answers to these ethical concerns, but the fact remains that we try to fight against disease and science will continue to find better ways to do so, and the consequences of these developments are yet to be determined.

Freeware software downloads

Freeware software download packages allow you learning opportunities and try before you buy

If you want to learn some new skills, enhance the capabilities of software applications you already have, or gather reference downloads, such as a dictionary, thesaurus or language translation application, investigating and trying out some of the freeware software downloads can save you time and money.

Programmers, usually individuals or small teams, develop software in their area of expertise for which there is a known, but perhaps already saturated market. For example, there are graphics software packages which are almost household names, such as Corel, PhotoPaint and Flash, which are excellent, loaded with features, but pricey.

The freeware software download packages provide a way for the small developers to market their products without a large advertising budget. If their product provides desirable features and a less complicated interface, the individual developer stands a good chance of breaking in to this competitive market. While there are probably tens of thousands of users who would like to learn to create computer graphics, most are reluctant to shell out hundreds of dollars in order to give it a chance.

So what’s the catch? Freeware software download versions are typically an abbreviated version of a software product you can later buy, usually at a nominal price, which contains all the bells and whistles. Other freeware is ’self contained’. This type of software is more of a tool than an application. For example, you can download a graphics color matching tool, quite useful in cases where you’re developing a web page and have found one color, used on another website, which is the absolutely perfect shade you want to use as your background, navigation menu or a button. How do you determine what that precise color is?

Instead of having to filter through the entire HTML color charts, a potentially time consuming task, you can use this type of freeware software download tool to instantly identify the color. You simply place the cursor over the desired color and a little pop-up box gives you the number code that matches, right down to a single pixel. What a fabulous, time saving piece of software!

So, you might well wonder how the developer makes any money. Most of the freeware software download sites provide a link to the developer’s website, on the page which describes the details of that freeware. Clicking through, you can see what other nifty software is offered on a particular developer’s website. Once you’ve tried out the freebie and found that it works just as advertised, you then have confidence in other products from the same developer. This means you may buy an application, pass the good word on to a friend, or click on one of the ads, which earns that website a commission.

Another advantage of the software download sites is that you can read through the reviews of others who have already downloaded that software and tried it out. There’s also the website editor’s review, which is usually thorough and covers the pros and cons in detail.

Based on the editor and user comments, date of the submission to the software download site and numbers of other people who’ve downloaded the package, you can make an educated decision on whether this is worth your while.

If you’re looking for strictly freeware, the software download sites allow you to specify freeware only, saving you the time of sifting through, sometimes dozens of pages of both free and paid software.

No matter what your subject of interest, the freeware software downloads can open up a whole new world of software applications and tools, as well as leads to some of the best independent developer’s websites. What have you got to lose?

Cheap or Free Music Downloads

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Nobody I know buys CDs anymore. We all have iPods or other MP3 players, so we need all our songs in digital format. We get all of them online, and no longer have to pay gobs of money for 14 songs we don’t want just to gain access to the one we do like. Obviously, this is a much better system for consumers. Artists and the recording industry are adapting as well, which is why there are so many places to get cheap or free music downloads these days.

To be clear, I’m not talking about illegal P2P file-sharing sites here. Those types of places abound, and whether you use them or not is your own choice. But just be aware that you’re violating copyright laws when you participate in those kinds of schemes and can be sued or even prosecuted. Record companies have already won numerous well-publicized judgments against people who shared files illegally, so there’s always a chance you might get caught.

Anyway, let’s get back to the perfectly legal cheap or free music downloads that you can find online. First, on the cheap side of things, there are sites like iTunes or Napster. Most people are familiar with iTunes, of course, as this is the online store run by Apple to provide songs to iPod owners. On iTunes, you can buy virtually any song you desire for $.99, and there are even a lot of completely free music downloads too. The freebies are mostly from lesser-known bands that want to develop a following, but some major artists provide songs at no charge as well.

Napster and a few other websites offer a different model than iTunes, but still allow customers to enjoy cheap or free music downloads. In this case, you pay a flat monthly membership fee, thereby granting you access to Napster’s entire library of songs. The catch is that you can only listen to these tunes through your computer while you have an active membership. If you want to transfer the songs to a portable player, you need to pay an extra fee. As with iTunes, there are some free music downloads to be had, mostly for promotional purposes.

No matter which service you join, you’ll be able to choose from millions of tracks in every genre imaginable. You’ll find all your current favorites, as well as oldies and up-and-coming hits. One of the biggest advantages of joining a subscription service is that you can browse through as many tunes as you like and discover great new bands along the way.

With all the cheap and free music downloads available online, you’ll be able to fill your portable MP3 player with thousands of top titles for a fraction of the cost of CDs. Isn’t the digital revolution a thing of beauty?

The Cost of Free Desktop Wallpaper Downloads

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Everybody likes free stuff-free coupons, free promotional giveaways, free food samples, you name it. As a general rule, free stuff is better than stuff you have to pay for. The best free stuff is the stuff that’s actually good quality to boot, and aren’t the best thing in life supposed to be free anyway? Not when it comes to stuff you have to literally pay for in the financial sense, not through metaphorical blood, sweat and tears.

It’s been said that there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Truthfully there can be, so it’s more like there’s usually no such thing as a good free lunch. That cream cheese and lox bagel someone dropped on the street is food free of charge, but obviously someone bit out of it and the ants are starting to make their move. Sadly, in most cases you can find free cake, but you won’t want to eat it too.

In the same vein, you’ll often find that free desktop wallpaper downloads are no exception. You can compliment your living room at no cost with the couch that’s been sitting out on the sidewalk waiting for someone to adopt it, but its cushions are tattered and who knows what’s been on them. You can decorate your computer desktop by taking your pick from the myriad of free desktop wallpaper downloads waiting for you to snag them, but who knows what kind of ‘artist’ designed them? Free desktop wallpapers can come with a lot of aesthetic annoyances. Some people think they can make wallpapers just by blowing up a picture. Others have way too much going on visually in their creations, and desktops aren’t meant to be cluttered. You have to give these people some credit for actually putting in the effort when most people would rather go scouring around for any decent free desktop wallpaper downloads they can find but the same time, art doesn’t come out of just effort and wallpapers are supposed to be nice to look at.

If you’re lucky enough you’ll come across desktop wallpapers born out of skillfulness as well as generosity, but usually getting good wallpapers involves an effort like joining a community, making one yourself, or making artistic friends on the internet you can commission from. As long as people continue to be complacent, free desktop wallpaper downloads won’t run out of customers.

Using free career aptitude tests to boost your employment and career opportunities

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

In the current economic downturn, we’re all discovering a new low in both job opportunities and job security. Millions of people have been laid off from their jobs. Where unemployment benefits previously bridged the gap for out of work employees, entire job sectors are going south, along with available jobs. You may have spent a decade or more working in the auto industry, only to find there are now no new job openings to apply for, not today or in the foreseeable future.

It may be time to reassess your skills and natural abilities and get a new direction for your career. One of the best ways to switch gears and find a new career is by taking a free career aptitude test. OK, you say, how do I find the resources, how does this work and what will a free career aptitude test do to get me back on the road to employment before my unemployment runs out?

Although this option is not well publicized, it’s nonetheless one of the freebies afforded by the government, available to anyone considering a career change or a new job opportunity.

Finding the resources for free career aptitude tests: Your local Department of Employment or Department of Human Resources is the best place to start. A phone call to either should give you the information on who to contact and where to go to get the ball rolling. Usually, you’ll be able to get an appointment to take the career aptitude test within a week.

What’s a free career aptitude test about? How does this work? Unlike most tests, a career aptitude test does not measure knowledge in a specific field. Instead, these tests are designed to measure your innate abilities – natural talents which have nothing to do with formal training or work experience. While you may have spent years in a career in which you performed well, your natural talents may not have been potentiated. For example, as a worker in the auto industry, you may have excelled in parts assembly, due to a natural ability for visual and analytical processing of mechanical and spatial concepts. This natural aptitude may indicate that you would do well in computer programming, surely worlds away from careers you might have thought within your grasp.

When you take these tests, they may not seem to make much sense. The tests will elicit opinions, seem to measure skills and ask questions which seem irrelevant. However, these free career aptitude tests are designed to cover every aspect of your personality and mind set, in order to reveal both what you most enjoy and for which you have natural talent.

Upon completing the career aptitude tests, your test results will be analyzed, usually within the day. On the following day, you’ll be presented with the results. You’ll find that this free career aptitude test is worth its weight in gold.

The road to employment: getting a job. If you’re young, the Job Corps is a possibility. If you’re older, the free career aptitude test can land you a paying job with an employer willing to commit to training you under a government subsidy. Under this provision, the employer is subsidized, directly paying a minimal wage, with the government making up the difference to meet minimal wage standards, while training you in your new career.

Other programs, resulting from the free career aptitude tests, don’t guarantee continued employment, but do offer work experience to add to your resume.

Either way you win. The free career aptitude tests can win you freedom, a new life and a better income.
