Affordable Small Group Tours to Great Destinations

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

In our gregarious society, it can be a bit embarrassing for a single person to do certain things solo. For instance, whenever I head to a restaurant at dinnertime by myself, I’m bound to get some odd looks from the waiter or other diners. The looks range from simply inquisitive to downright pitying, which makes me even more self-conscious than I was when I first walked in. The same thing happens when I attend a movie or a sporting event all alone. And I used to get similar stares at famous sightseeing spots until I started booking small group tours.

There are a couple different kinds of small group tours available. The first kind is for groups of people who already know each other, such as family members, friends, or schoolmates, but this obviously isn’t the one that applies to me. The second kind caters to singles who don’t wish to travel alone to great destinations across the country and around the world. These types of small group tours give individuals the opportunity to visit the best that our planet has to offer in a safe and comfortable setting.

Small group tours have been around forever, but I first heard about them a few years ago after a colleague of mine suggested I look into them. I had just returned from a trip to Paris, and was complaining of how awkward it was to visit that kind of romantic locale on my own. The worst was asking people to take a picture of me standing in front of Notre Dame or the Eiffel Tower, as I received more of those pitying looks that I’ve grown so accustomed to over the years. I know, I know — as an adult, these situations shouldn’t bother me. But they do, which is why I absolutely love small group tours now.

Small group tours can be arranged through most travel agencies, and include a number of benefits in addition to getting new traveling companions every time. For one thing, groups are often eligible for the best rates around, which means I actually end up saving money by booking this way. For another thing, all the details of the trip are pre-arranged. This includes transportation at the destination, a sightseeing itinerary (that often includes free days as well), and even meals. Plus, small group tours come with a guide who is knowledgeable about the destination and speaks the local language. That’s a huge advantage when journeying to far-flung places like China, Thailand, or various countries in Africa. There’s no way I would be able to navigate through those countries on my own.

I have been part of these small group tours for my last six vacations, and I have had terrific experiences each and every time. The accommodations were amazing, the packages were very affordable, and the companionship was wonderful. It’s so nice not to be on the receiving end of those sad-sack looks anymore that I can’t imagine traveling any other way!

The Best 50’s Costume Ideas

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Halloween is coming up again and if you are like me at all you know that searching for a Halloween costume is not at the top of your list. Searching for a Halloween costume can be a tedious and time-consuming task that costs money for only a few hours of fun, one night out of the year. But really, I wouldn’t mind the time and effort I put into finding a decent Halloween costume if only I could come up with a really great costume, something fun and original; sound like you? Well, here are some tips for a really unique approach to some excellent costumes: 50’s costume ideas.

The reason I like thinking about 50’s costume ideas so much is that it gives you a lot of options without a lot of other people dressing up as the same thing as someone else. Furthermore, a really good 50’s costume will not cost you an arm and a leg. As you will soon see, the idea of a 50’s costume as you buy at a store isn’t quite correct.

First of all, the 50’s costume is not new. There have been 50’s costumes out there for a long time; the saddle-shoe wearing poodle skirt costume or the soda jerk or the greaser. In fact, I have found that it is rare indeed to go to a costume party around Halloween and not to see someone dressed in one of these famous 50’s costumes. However, I think that is precisely why I will be avoiding them.

Personally, I think a good place to start for 50’s costume ideas is in celebrities from the 1950’s. In fact, this is a phenomenal place to start, particularly for the 1950’s because the 1950’s ushered in a whole new wave of celebrity focus and adoration in the United States. Some popular 50’s icons include Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. I think that working from there leads you to a really good 50’s costume.

Now, just having a celebrity is not necessarily enough. While dressing in period clothes helps some (and, perhaps enough), dressing up as a famous character that the celebrity you are interested in might be the difference between a good 50’s costume and a great 50’s costume.

Coming up with 50’s costume ideas is not hard; it takes a little bit of effort and some time, but it can also save you money and, most importantly, have one of the best costumes at your Halloween function.

Dominican Chicken: A Quick and Easy 30 Minute Meal

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

I love to cook, but there just isn’t always time to prepare the complicated and exotic meals I dream up. In reality, when I get home from a long day at work, I don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen preparing dinner. That’s why I value quick, easy and healthy recipes like Dominican Chicken, a dish I adapted from an authentic Dominican recipe. I turned a friend’s family recipe into a simple but delicious 30 minute meal.

The ingredients are few and the steps are simple, making this chicken dish your perfect 30 minute meal. All you need is a couple of chicken breasts, a can of tomato paste, a lime, some white vinegar and some diced fresh cilantro – and of course salt and pepper. Amounts don’t have to be exact. You want to taste your food frequently and spice it just the way you like it best.

The first step is to cut up the chicken into about 1-inch cubes. Honestly, if you’re in a rush, you can cook the breasts whole as well. That might take another 5 minutes out of your 30 minute meal, which can help when you’re pressed for time. Personally, I prefer to cube the chicken. Heat some olive oil – just one or two tablespoons – in a large skillet or wok. When the oil is nice and hot, then throw in the chicken cubes. Cook them on medium-high heat until they’re browned on every side.

When the chicken is cooked on the outside, turn the heat down to medium-low. Then add to the pan about 2 tablespoons of tomato paste, one tablespoon of vinegar, and the juice of the lime. Stir it all together and let it cook for about 5 – 10 minutes. You really just want it to cook until the chicken is cooked through. Season it with salt and pepper to taste. Just before serving, stir in the cilantro. I usually use about one quarter cup, but it really is a matter of taste.

This fabulous and oh-so-easy 30 minute meal will absolutely wow your family with its fresh and slightly exotic flavors. Serve it with Spanish style rice, which is also super easy and delicious. Simply saute some uncooked rice in olive oil until the rice begins to brown. Add diced onions and tomatoes and stir for about 2 minutes. Then add chicken stock – just use the amount of water you would normally use with the amount of rice you used. Cover and let it simmer for 15 – 20minutes. Then season with salt to taste. If you do the rice alongside the chicken, it won’t add any time to your 30 minute meal. But it will impress your guests!

1st signs of pregnancy

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Pregnancy changes lives monumentally and whether someone is trying to conceive or not, the 1st signs of pregnancy are crucial in telling a woman what will come next in her life. Over the years, technology has improved so much that very little data is needed to determine whether or not a woman is pregnant.

If a woman is late and misses her monthly menstruation, this is the most well known sign of early pregnancy. If the period is different from what the woman is used to and last shorter or longer, she may be pregnant.

Many women experience nausea and throw up. This is commonly referred to as morning sickness and is often a sign of pregnancy. This does not mean the woman has to fell sick only in the morning. Any nauseous and/or vomiting could be sign of pregnancy and the symptoms could be worse if you have not eaten yet, which is usually during the morning.

Soreness and/or enlargement of the breasts are other 1st signs of pregnancy. The breast may be preparing to produce milk to feed a baby and this process may be painful. The breasts may also expand to make room for the newly produced milk. If you notice a change in your breasts, this may be a sign of pregnancy.

Another of the 1st signs of pregnancy is having to urinate constantly. This symptom can carry all the way through the end of the pregnancy, or the third trimester. A woman’s pregnancy causes a lot of extra fluids to be pushed through the kidneys, making it crucial to urinate often.

Being tired all the time could be another sign of early pregnancy. Your body is preparing to grow a fetus inside and your hormones are already changing your attitude and mood, which can be mentally exhausting.

Another common sign of pregnancy is bizarre cravings. Since pregnancy enhances all senses, a woman’s ability to smell is heightened, causing her to desire foods she may not normally want. Some stereotypical cravings are pickles, ice cream, raw meat and peanut butter. There is nothing wrong with indulging from time to time, but good nutritional is a vital part of having a healthy pregnancy.

Movement is another of the 1st signs of pregnancy. Feeling movement in your mid-section could be a developing fetus. Any movement you feel should warrant a trip to the doctor’s office for a pregnancy test and possible ultrasound to determine what could be causing the movement.

Get Inspired by Kitchen, Bedroom, and Bathroom Remodel Photos

Monday, January 11th, 2010

I just purchased an 80-year-old house at a price that was simply too tempting to pass up. It’s in a great suburb with excellent schools, and is the kind of place I can envision raising a family. The only problem with getting a house this old is that it’s going to take a lot of work to bring it up to modern standards. In fact, I’m planning on renovating the entire interior, which is why I’m currently poring over kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom remodel photos every chance I get.

I’m going to start in the kitchen, where the bulk of the work will focus on opening up the space and replacing outdated appliances with the newest models. Some of the remodeling pictures I’ve seen have featured absolutely stunning cabinets and countertops, so I might decide to have those replaced as well. The scope of the project will ultimately depend on how much I need to do in my other rooms.

In addition to the kitchen stuff, I’ve been looking at bedroom and bathroom remodel photos as well. The bedrooms in this house are quite small, so I’m thinking of knocking out the walls between them in order to make them larger. I’ll probably end up going from four bedrooms to two, but that should work for the time being. I can always finish the basement at a later date and put another room down there. I also need to renovate the closets in the bedrooms because the current ones are barely more than crawlspaces. How the previous owners survived in here I’ll never know!

I’ve been having the most trouble deciding which bathroom remodel photos I like best. I’ve seen a number of terrific ideas that could work well in my house, but can’t get myself to commit to just one idea yet. Some of the bathroom remodel photos exhibit a great deal of creativity as far as showing how to get the most use out of a limited area. This is necessary because there’s no way I’m going to be able to expand the bathrooms like I’m doing for the bedrooms.

I think the smartest way to proceed from here is to choose the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom remodel photos that I like best, and then consult with a contractor to see which ideas are the most feasible and affordable. I do need to keep an eye on the bottom line here, as I don’t want to negate the bargain price I paid for the house by spending the entire discount on renovations!

If you’re thinking about upgrading your home, then you really need to check out different kitchen, living, dining, and bathroom remodel photos for inspiration and ideas. It’s fun to see what other people have done with their homes, and you just might come across the perfect look for your house as well. Plus, you can find a bunch of them online and view them for free, so what’s stopping you?

Is a 1000 Calorie Diet Right For You?

Monday, January 11th, 2010

With summer on the immediate horizon, lazy beach days are approaching with great rapidity and with all the other joys that summer brings with it – surf, sand, and ice cream cones – it also brings with it the stress over our bodies. Are we bathing suit ready? What is it going to take to make us so? Is one problem area? Toning, should we tone? After the initial panic subsides most of us wind up doing the exact same thing, spring after spring, year in and year out. We diet in the hopes of getting a body that everyone else on the beach will be completely envious of. The next course of action is finding the diet that is right for you. For some this means a life free of carbs, other stick to a liquid diet. But one of the most popular modes is watching what you eat, which means restricting your caloric intake. An extreme example of kicking your butt into a bikini? A 1000 calorie diet.

We all know from having eyed even in the passing the nutritional information found of the packages of nearly everything we consume that the average person should be eating a well-balanced diet comprised of 2000. When you take on a new change in diet like the 1000 calorie diet, you have got to be even more aware about what you are consuming to ensure that your body is getting everything it needs to keep it healthy and happy. This is not to say that a 1000 calorie diet is off limits for folks, not at all. In fact that 2000 calorie statistic you will find on those packages is a median of a the population, comprised of men, women and children all of whom have drastically different nutritional needs.

Women, being typically smaller in build than men, require fewer calories, so a 1000 calorie diet while dieting is not extreme at all, especially as a woman ages and her metabolism slows. 1000 calorie diet leaves plenty of room for all the essential nutrients the body needs to thrive, including fruits, vegetables, proteins, and the goodness of whole grains. If one is sure to include water in their 1000 calorie diet in addition to all the proper types of food, they will be sure to get a body that is beach ready in no time.

80s halloween costumes for the oughties

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Everything old is new again, be it in literature, cinema, sports or, yes, parties. And there’s no bigger or better party to enjoy than Halloween, the one day a year that everyone can cut loose and have fun without having to inhabit your own skin.

In that spirit, then, it’s a good idea to take a look at the best 80s halloween costumes the world has to offer, since the 80s are the new oughties. The days of Reaganomics, Gordon Gecco and John Hughes (rest in peace!) are all back upon us, and if you want the best 80s halloween costumes, those are all good places to start.

Going as Gordon Gecco, for example, is a perfect idea for an 80s halloween costumes. Gecco, for those who don’t remember, was the antagonist in the 1987 hit film Wall Street, starring Charlie Sheen as an idealistic young stockbroker who is corrupted by both the process and Gecco himself, played brilliantly by Michael Douglass. Gecco cuts a stereotypical 80s figure: Slicked back hair, armani suit, martini clutched in one hand and brick-sized cellphone in the other. If you decide to go as Gecco for your costume, that’s where you start. But to differentiate it from other 80s halloween costumes of that ilk, you can go a step further.

Gecco’s famous line in the film, a line oft repeated facetiously in some circles and reverently in others, is Greed is good. Oliver Stone intended the line to encapsulate everything not only about Gecco himself and the financial community in general, but also the time and place that were the 1980s. So if you’re going as Gordon Gecco, you need to work Greed is good into your costume. My suggestion would be something as simple as taping a sign with that phrase to your back. If you come up with something even better, go for it.

Some 80s halloween costumes that my girlfriend and I have kicked around without actually doing over the years center on two other films from that decade that we both love. First is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I would go as Indy, and she would go as Short Round. For those who don’t remember, Short Round was the 10 year old asian boy sidekick to Indy on that particular adventure. The idea works on a lot of levels if you think about it, many of them funny and wholly inappropriate.

Another of the 80s halloween costumes we’ve considered is getting a bunch of friends together and going as The Goonies. Coincidentally, the actor who plays Short Round also plays Data in The Goonies, so if you have an asian friend who’s willing to play the token role, get him or her aboard and go from there.

Two other great ensemble ideas from movies of that time are going as either the Ghostbusters or The Breakfast Club. Both are iconic 80s films that almost anyone would recognize off the bat, and can be a lot of fun to dress up as.

The Best Ever 80’s Arcade Games

Monday, January 11th, 2010

These are not the most popular 80’s arcade games, as determined by scientific polling. They’re not the biggest money-making games of the decade, either. But they are my personal favorites, determined entirely subjectively through sheer force of opinion, tinged with some sweet, rose-colored nostalgia. With that said, here they are: the top five arcade games of the 1980’s, in no particular order. Feel free to disagree, but know that you’re wrong.

First off is, of course, Pac Man. A cliche perhaps, in some people’s minds, but I prefer to think of him as an icon. Either way, Pac Man is unquestionably the king of 80’s arcade games. To this day I admire the charming simplicity of this 80’s arcade legend. Move him through the puzzle. Eat the dots. Avoid the ghosts. Eat the super pellets. Eat the ghosts. Run away again. There’s something very elegant about this classic 80’s video game.

The next on my list of the best 80’s arcade games has to be Centipede. Again, a simple concept – and like Pac Man, it’s a game format that we haven’t seen repeated in the intervening years. Unlike most 80’s arcade games, Centipede had no joystick. Instead, it had a strange rolling ball, along with a primal sense of impending doom as the centipede crept down the screen to kill you.

There are so many fun and memorable 80’s arcade games, that it does become difficult to narrow them down to a few treasured favorites. One game that absolutely must be included on the list is Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong is a classic among 80’s arcade games for so many reasons. Without DK, we’d never have Mario, for one thing. The sound effects of the original Donkey Kong game still echo in my head from time to time, reminding me of the whole 80’s arcade experience.

Another great arcade game of the 80’s was the all-time classic, Tron. I have to admit that I wouldn’t care at all about the game Tron if it hadn’t been for the movie. In fact, I believe that Tron the game was actually based on Tron the movie, and not the other way around. Either way, it’s the coolest of 80’s movies and definitely one of my top five 80’s arcade games.

Now, no list of great 80’s arcade games would be complete without a mention of Tetris. Yes, Tetris came around in the later part of the decade, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be counted on this list. In my opinion, Tetris is not only the greatest of all 80’s arcade games; it is quite possibly the best video game of all time. It is totally original, totally addictive, and inexplicably gratifying to play. I would take Tetris over any other arcade or video game any day.

Finding a Great 70’s Costume

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

With Halloween fast approaching, many people are scrambling for a costume. Selecting the right Halloween costume can be difficult; there are now more choices than every before and the simple act of going to one store and picking out a costume in fifteen minutes is a thing of the past. Lately, I have been thinking more and more about period costumes as a great choice to stand out this Halloween. Mostly, I am trying to find a great 70’s costume.

There are several reasons I like period costuming for Halloween. First of all, it definitely rides that thin line between obscurity and originality. You can come up with something clever that people can still easily indentify and recognize without being obvious and lame. A 70’s costume would be no exception; even if people do not remember who exactly you are, they will usually be impressed with the original thought and attention to period detail.

When I think of a 70’s costume, I try to go beyond the obvious. It seems like every decade has one or two costumes that people immediately think of and the 70’s are no exception. For the most part, the common 70’s costume is either a disco girl or a Superfly-esque pimp. These are all well and good, but they will not win you any points for new; they are costumes you see, maybe not everywhere, but once in a while.

A good period 70’s costume, then goes a little deeper. The place I like to start is celebrities. Who was famous in the 70’s? And did they have such a distinctive look that you can pull of. Most people think of Elvis as a 50’s celebrity, but he made a huge comeback in the 70’s with his Vegas-style costumes. Elvis is not the best example, but other celebrities had distinctive looks that can make a great 70’s costume.

Even better, perhaps than dressing as a celebrity, since few of them stand out in terms of an unmistakeable signature style, is dressing up as a famous character from the 70’s. This is my favorite option for a great 70’s costume if you can do it correctly. Personally, I think dressing up like Jack Nicholson’s character in Chinatown, complete with nose bandage would be a great choice.

However you approach your 70’s costume, I think it will be a great success. People love period costumes and if you make one that is uniquely yours, all the better. Take a little time to think outside the box and you will be sure to have a great 70’s costume!
