Looking for work?

Looking for work? How to use the job search engines to land your next job!

A job search engine is a data base retrieval system that enables users to specify keywords related to the jobs they are seeking. These keywords not only include the expected job title, such as ‘writer’, ‘programmer’, ‘typist’, but also location keywords to narrow your search results. These specialized search engines allow you to specify the country, state or city in which you are searching for a job. In addition, most job search engines allow you to search for permanent jobs, temporary jobs, contracts and even telecommute work. Some will also answer to keywords that are not job titles, such as ‘java’, ‘equity’, or ‘travel’. Like most search engines, a job search engine combines these keys into a query that it then submits to its database and returns to your screen a listing of job entries that most closely match your specifications.

Most states in the United States publish their job listings to the public through the Internet. The federal government also makes federal jobs available on the Internet. Most big job agencies list their available jobs on search engines, especially those jobs for which the customer has asked for a national search of candidates. Some companies rely exclusively on national search engines to find their job candidates, even if the job requires local residence.

Businesses often have their own job search engine that you can access from some link on the firm’s homepage. If you’ve worked for a company in the past, left it, worked at another and are now looking for a job, see if you can find the company your worked for previously on the Internet. There’s a good chance they’re listing their jobs. You might even find your old job among them! Why not check the home pages of all the companies you’ve worked for in the past? You’ve got the advantage of having worked for them before. They know who you are and what work you’re capable of performing for them.

Of course, there are many companies that specialize in finding job openings and posting these on the Internet. The well advertised Monster.com search engine is perhaps the largest job search engine on the Internet today. Dice.com is famous for listing technical jobs, and CareerBuilder.com boast 1.6 million jobs at the time of this writing. Jobcentral.com is another up and coming job search engine through which many job seekers are finding new careers. Yahoo’s ‘hotjobs’ site is also becoming a popular job search engine, in this recent economic slump. Craigslist.com is an excellent site to find both full-time employment and short gigs. These search engines all provide job searches by job title and location and are easy to use, both in the search and in your follow up.

In addition to thee large commercial job search engines, there are literally thousands of job search engines advertising jobs in a specialty. These list only jobs in the specialty, such as jobs in the health fields, in technology, in law, and in the emerging field of green jobs. Search on the specialty you’re interested in and the phrase, ‘job search’. With more than sixty-four million job search results, you’re bound to find the one that’s advertising your next job!

Treatments for Depression

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Clinical psychology classes and pamphlets about depression will tell you that treatments for depression are widely available and that they can be highly effective. Treatments for depression include medication, counseling and other kinds of therapy. It’s often said that a combination of medication and therapy proves to be the best treatment.

Antidepressant drugs are prescribed to enhance the mood of people with depression. Most antidepressants work by slowing down the reuptake of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that travel through the neurons in our brains. When neurons are done sending neurotransmitters, they bring them back inside. Antidepressants keep neurotransmitters related to mood working longer so that mood increases. It’s important to realize that antidepressants don’t work by taking away depression. Instead, it’s more like they lift you up so that the symptoms can improve.

Therapy is the other option for treating depression. Most people think of Freud and psychoanalysis, and while a form of it exists today, psychoanalysis in its original form is debunked and no longer practiced. The one element of Freud that remains is that therapy tries to get into the underlying causes of your problems. A common form of therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which aims to treat the distorted thinking of depression patients so that they can change behavior that perpetuates their depression. By meeting with a therapist on a regular basis, patients can conceptualize what they’re feeling and going through and learn to cope with it.

Treatments for depression do work for people, but treating depression isn’t always as simple or effective as it might seem. For one thing, medication and therapy can cost a lot of money. Insurance helps decrease the cost, but the fees for your antidepressant refills accumulate especially if you’re going to take them for the rest of your life, and therapy can cost up to a little over $100 per session if you’re seeing a therapist at their private practice. There are also negative side effects for at least the first month while taking antidepressants, and it’s not guaranteed to work. Sometimes patients have to switch around to figure out which one helps them. Therapy can be effective if it’s consistent but patients have to find the therapist that’s right for them, which can be difficult.

Another issue with treatments for depression is that treatment is contingent upon the patient seeking it for themselves. The patient is responsible for getting their prescriptions and monitoring their intake, and therapy will only work if the patient is willing to participate. The problem is that depression can debilitate you and make you not want to do these things. This is where outside support can come in. Treatments for depression don’t all have to be professional. Friends and family who are supportive and understanding can do a lot for people with depression.

It’s never certain whether treatments for depression will work or not because everyone is different—they have different experiences, different problems, and different biological makeup and so on. Everyone has to pick the treatment that’s right for them, but figuring out which treatments for depression will work for you can be a challenge.

political writing

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

No matter what your political affiliation is, it probably isn’t represented by the mainstream media. By trying to please everyone, the media – like the political establishment it has come to serve – pleases no one. For most Americans, until recently they just had to put up with this situation. Until the invention of political blogs, there was simply no good news analysis that didn’t try to tow a moderate party line. Thanks to politics blogs, however, that has all changed. No matter what ideological position you are coming from, you can find a political blog that is written for you.

I have been reading liberal political blogs for about three years now, and I feel like they have really enhanced my understanding of current events. We live in such a conservative society that much of the real news of what is going on is censored by the mainstream media. In these free political forums, however, the news can finally be heard by the public that is hungry for it. Unfortunately, political blogs don’t have the budget to do some of the things that the more mainstream news outlets do. They cannot have correspondents all over the world, for example, ready to report any event that happens. What they can do, however, is access a wide range of different media and try to put together a more complete picture than any single publication does. News analysis is a valuable service, and one that is completely neglected by the mainstream media. Thanks to political blogs, we can get beyond the the facile analysis provided by most of the news pundit shows.

Of course, the problem with personal blogs is that they do not have the same standards of proof as some of the media outlets do. While most political blogs are at least as dependable as Fox news, when they are compared to legitimate media outlets, many of them falls short. This is why you have to pick and choose carefully when you are reading blogs. Anyone can write anything they want on a political blog, and it is very hard for someone to call them on it. After all, free speech is a right, and posting on the Internet is simply an extension of that right. People have just as much right to blog political fiction as fact, and rumormongers abounds. As always, it is up to you to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Facts about Credit Cards

Friday, March 26th, 2010

When you hear of credit cards, what comes to your mind? For many people, it a catastrophe of numbers as they stare in disbelief at the balance, as if some fiscal Mr. Hyde had gone on a manic spree of shopping of virtually whatever he can get his hands on. For one thing, shopping with credit cards is different. This is because you do not see the money, all you have to do is give out the card and you get the card back. However, in reality, more than money has exchanged hands. As you may realize, shopping with credit cards may spell more trouble for your financial problems than dealing with cash, and for good reason.

The most widely used and honored cards are MasterCard and Visa, but they are far from the being the only ones. Credit cards are issued by financial institutions and they usually carry a $15 to $25 annual fee. However, depending on the credit history of the customer, this fee may sometimes be waived. His or her continued use of the card will also determine the interest charges and other ‘miscellaneous’ fees. In most cases, if payments are made in full, then no interest is charged. However, when a customer decides to pay in monthly installments, this will usually result in high interest charges. Again, depending on the applicant’s credit history, the financial institution will stipulate the spending limit of its customers. As you demonstrate your ability to pay, this spending limit is raised or lowered.

Using credit cards also has the advantage of allowing one to secure cash advances from automatic teller machines. However, there is a flip side to this. Obtaining cash this way is usually a costly affair. In fact, approximately anywhere between $2 and $5 are charged for every $100 borrowed in this way. What is more, interest on this cash is accrued from the day you withdraw the cash. Other institutions that offer credit cards include store chains, oil companies and travel and entertainment establishments. While some of these may not have any annual fees, the interest charged due to failure to pay in full any credit accrued may be much higher than that charged on bank cards.

From the above, it is therefore prudent to consider and wheigh your needs and options before obtaining a credit card. According to the Federal Reserve System of the U.S Government, you should take note of the annual percentage rate or APR, the annual fee, grace period, over-the-limit fees, late-payment charges as well as the cash-advance fees before applying for a card. You will save yourself some cash and a lot of heartache in the process.

How to Select a Quality Attorney for a Personal Injury Claim

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Personal injury claims are filed when one has been physically or emotionally injured because of someone else’s negligence or misconduct. They come in different types including medical malpractice, vehicle accidents, slip and fall, product liability, and assaults and battery, among others.

Compensation for personal injury losses:

A personal injury lawsuit involves determining the one who is liable for the injury. Once the responsible party has been determined and the negligence proven, the court then obliges the party at fault to recompense the injured person’s losses. These losses can be past and future medication expenses, lost salaries, disfigurement damages, and incurred damages for emotional and physical pain and suffering, among others. A close family member of an injured person may also be granted compensation for losses and damages because of losing the injured person’s services and companionship. This type of grant is legally called “loss of consortium damages.”

There are also other types of damages that can be granted depending on factors such as the state’s laws and specific facts in the case. For example, an injured person who, becauseof the injury, lost the opportunity to experience or do the things he used to value or enjoy doing may be awarded compensation for hedonic damages.

Selecting a quality attorney for a personal injury claim:

In a personal injury lawsuit, as in other types of cases, you must get an attorney that best suits your needs. Lawyers have their own areas of expertise and you should get one wh

o specializes and has enough experience in handling cases of injury. Do your research and make a list of attorneys specializing in injury claims. You can take a look at newspapers for advertisements placed by attorneys or ask your own personal contacts such as your family and friends for referrals. You can also check out bar associations or lawyer organizations and inquire about their lists of attorneys. Some bar associations usually have lists of lawyers in various geographical areas and fields of expertise.

Once you are satisfied with your list, it’s time to research on each lawyer. One of the best ways to check out an attorney is by scheduling an initial consultation. While you can’t expect to be given free advice on how to go about your personal injury claim in this consultation, you can assess the following factors you can consider in choosing the right lawyer for you:

Bill Me Later

Friday, October 16th, 2009

The Bill Me Later feature offers buy now pay later programs that is really simple to use. In fact, it may be a little too simple. Many of us are really impatient. That’s why we choose to shop online. There is basically no faster way to make a purchase on your computer than through the buy now pay later feature.

The quick process is due mainly to the fact that you don’t have to worry about providing account numbers and there is basically no waiting. The information that you provide with the Bill Me Later option is surface and you already have it all memorized. The buy now pay later feature is a real draw for many impatient shoppers.

Many shoppers also like to feel secure when shopping online. I get nervous each and every time that I enter account information online. This is especially true since the recent explosion of cases of identity theft. When you choose to use buy now pay later options you are not going to provide any personal information.

It’s nice to be rewarded for good behavior and knowing that most buy now pay later programs do require credit approval. You are actually getting an account through a bank that gives you monthly statements. There are other options with the buy now pay later programs in addition to the bank credit account.

You can pay off your bill in full each month. I highly recommend doing this because you will pay interest charges if you carry a balance from month to month. However, it is nice to know that the buy now pay later option allows you to make installments rather than paying off the entire bill all at once.

Some buy now pay later programs offer a 90 days same as cash option. You don’t have to worry about any interest accumulating if you pay off the balance within three months. This is a terrific program for anyone making a purchase over 250 dollars.

Online shopping has never been better even for those who cringe at the idea of using credit card information on the World Wide Web. Buy now pay later options allow anyone who has decent credit to enjoy purchasing online without worry.

Just like Mom

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

I have found that the older I get the more like my mother I am. My sisters used to tease me about this and it would make me angry. I tried to fight the similarities and monitor what I would say and do. One day my husband pointed out to me that my mother was a generous loving woman and that I should be proud that people thought I was similar to her. I reflected on this and realized that he was right, I should be trying harder to be more like her rather than discounting the traits we had in common.

I was reminded of my mother the other day when my son and his wife were over to our house visiting. As I watched my daughter in law through out the day I was noticing signs of pregnancy. My mother had an uncanny ability to notice pregnancy. She knew I was pregnant with my first child before I could announce it to her. With my second pregnancy she knew I was pregnant before I did. I did not want to spoil my daughter-in-laws announcement so I did not say anything to her throughout the day. As we were doing dishes and cleaning up the kitchen she mentioned that she could not understand why she was so tired. She said she had been feeling very tired for a few weeks, even though she was getting the same amount of sleep that she always does. I casually mentioned that this was one of the signs of pregnancy. She looked at me very surprised and asked if I thought it could be possible. We both laughed at the question and she became embarrassed. I asked her if she had experienced any of the other signs of pregnancy such as being overly emotional or feeling queasy in the morning or around certain smells. She confirmed all of the symptoms plus her last period had been very light and lasted only two days. She said that they had gone off birth control last month because they wanted to start a family. She attributed all the symptoms to being off the pill. So many of they’re friends were having a difficult time getting pregnant so she did not think it would happen immediately for them.

She went into the living room where her father and husband were playing chess. She told them that I had pointed out several signs of pregnancy to her and that she thought she might be pregnant. She insisted that we go to the drug store around the corner to get a pregnancy test. We bought the test and she went into the bathroom, within a minute she came out laughing and crying at the same time. The test came out positive. It was so fun to watch her and our son dance around the living room in joy.

Singing in the shower

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

You know how people are always singing in the shower? This seems to be a tradition amongst humans. Or at least amongst Americans anyway. It doesn’t really matter if they CAN sing or not. They simply step under the hot water, and suddenly they think their Brian McKnight or Celine Dion. It’s pretty funny actually. Surely you have some folks in your household that are like this. Maybe they never sing while in the living room, kitchen, or even their own bedroom, but once they step in that show, look out. All sorts of screeching and whaling begin to come out. Now, how do you suppose we can put an end to this atrocious sound? Ah ha, technology has come through once again with a shower clock radio. Just hang that baby over the shower head and listen to all the tunes you please. I promise you’ll get much less complaints form the neighbors, and your dog will stop howling as well.

So I have this teenager living in my home. It appears that singing in the shower is her favorite pastime. The girl can’t just take a quick, quit shower and move on. She has to get in there and scream at the top of her lungs. This is not so pleasant for the rest of the household, because singing is not her forte. The girl practically sounds like a dying cat. Sadly it doesn’t matter if it’s morning or night. She will bust out into song at either time of day. If others are going to bed, no biggy. People are still asleep because it’s 6am, no problem for her. She sings regardless. Finally I found a solution. It’s called the shower clock radio. Or actually the shower clock radio/CD player. This handy device does it all. And the great part is that she was stoked to get it. I told her to use it as an alternative to singing in the shower so loudly. She could now listen to the shower clock radio, but keep it at a reasonable volume. Ah, I love it when a plan comes together.

Need an awesome gift for your teenager, wife, husband, or friend? The shower clock radio is an awesome place to start. You can find these at Sharper Image for a reasonable cost. The play CDs and are completely water proof. You don’t have to worry about your CD player getting ruined or you getting electrocuted. Pick up one for your shower today.

Your Bone Density

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

I never really thought about bone density, but I guess this is something that I have to start to consider. I am still young yet, but I am aware now more than ever that what I do today will have an effect on my health long into to future. Luckily, osteoporosis is not something that is a problem in my family, but that does not mean that I don’t have to watch what I do and take care of my bone health. For those older than me, this might be an even more pressing issue.

As we age, our bone density can go down. I think it goes down for everyone, but for some it can be a huge problem. When the bones are not dense enough they cannot hold their form like they once did, and this can lead to bones bending and breaking. Some with bone density problems will suffer from a stoop, and may get a large hump in their spine that they may not be able to correct once it happens. Some just get shorter as their bones compact. It seems to be a bigger problem for women, and some think it has to do with the hormonal change of menopause.

Anyone concerned about bone density should talk to their doctor. It is important early in life to get enough calcium to keep bones strong, and it is also important later in life to prevent breaks. Older people often fall and break a bone because their bone density is just not what it should be. However, there will always be some type of problem for everyone, but it does not have to be bad if it is taken care of throughout life. Some can do all they can and they will still have problems, and though there is help, it might just be a fact of life in some families.

Those who are facing bone density issues can be tested, and there are some new medications on the market that can help if there is a problem. Though things may never be what they use to be for anyone, there are things that can help make things a little better. No one wants to worry about falling down and perhaps ending up with a stoop, but it can be a reality for some of they don’t take care of bone density when it is apparent there may be a problem.

Junk food

Monday, October 12th, 2009

I grew up in the generation of junk food – eating anything and everything unhealthy for me. I turned out fine. I’m incredibly healthy, despite the fact that I practically survived on candy bars and potato chips. Nowadays, there’s a major obesity problem going on in the world and everyone wants to point fingers at junk food at being the culprit. I tend to disagree with that. Sure, there is way too much junk food being marketed in today’s society. There’s too much fat and calories in all of the food we’re eating. Fast food restaurants are adjusting their trans fat and the way their foods are prepared and made. While that makes some people happy, people aren’t realizing that some of the blame needs to be placed on parents and on people themselves.

The fact is, when you have a tendency and habit to shove junk food in your mouth, you will tend to gain weight. It doesn’t take a genius to figure this logic out. Parents let their children overeat junk food. I’ve seen parents let their kids eat lots of unhealthy food and then expect their child to eat a healthy dinner. That doesn’t happen.

Eating junk food can be healthy and normal – if it is kept to certain restrictions and levels. Letting your child survive on cookies and candy isn’t going to result in anything but higher dentist bills and larger clothing. But, giving your kids healthy meals and allowing junk food as in-between snacks isn’t anything horrible, provided it isn’t in excess. Giving your child a handful of Oreo cookies isn’t terrible but allowing them to eat as many as they want can be rather unhealthy.

Kids today, as well as adults, use food as a method of soothing themselves. I will include myself in that statement. When I’m depressed or hating the world, I find myself reaching for a candy bar or a bowl of ice cream. Is that healthy? No. Does it taste good? Absolutely. So, how do we solve this issue? I’ve recognized the fact that I utilize junk food in this manner. While I’m not unhealthy, I’m not exactly getting any skinnier in my years. So, I have tried to find junk food that has less calories, reduced fat or seems to be less detrimental to me. Instead of ice cream, I might look for frozen yogurt. I’ve tried to buy crackers with less fat. I’m not sure if I can credit some of my weight loss to eating junk foods that seem to be less evil, or if I need to credit the fact that I’m more aware of what I eat. But, if you can prevent some calories or trans fat from entering your body, that’s a positive thing. Even better, if your children see you eater snacks and junk food that has less fat and calories, they
will follow your lead. Of course, they have to follow your lead if that’s all that is in the house for them to munch on.

You don’t need to give up the junk food that tastes incredibly good, you just need to be more conscious about the junk food and make wiser choices.
