Looking for work?

August 12th, 2010

Looking for work? How to use the job search engines to land your next job!

A job search engine is a data base retrieval system that enables users to specify keywords related to the jobs they are seeking. These keywords not only include the expected job title, such as ‘writer’, ‘programmer’, ‘typist’, but also location keywords to narrow your search results. These specialized search engines allow you to specify the country, state or city in which you are searching for a job. In addition, most job search engines allow you to search for permanent jobs, temporary jobs, contracts and even telecommute work. Some will also answer to keywords that are not job titles, such as ‘java’, ‘equity’, or ‘travel’. Like most search engines, a job search engine combines these keys into a query that it then submits to its database and returns to your screen a listing of job entries that most closely match your specifications.

Most states in the United States publish their job listings to the public through the Internet. The federal government also makes federal jobs available on the Internet. Most big job agencies list their available jobs on search engines, especially those jobs for which the customer has asked for a national search of candidates. Some companies rely exclusively on national search engines to find their job candidates, even if the job requires local residence.

Businesses often have their own job search engine that you can access from some link on the firm’s homepage. If you’ve worked for a company in the past, left it, worked at another and are now looking for a job, see if you can find the company your worked for previously on the Internet. There’s a good chance they’re listing their jobs. You might even find your old job among them! Why not check the home pages of all the companies you’ve worked for in the past? You’ve got the advantage of having worked for them before. They know who you are and what work you’re capable of performing for them.

Of course, there are many companies that specialize in finding job openings and posting these on the Internet. The well advertised Monster.com search engine is perhaps the largest job search engine on the Internet today. Dice.com is famous for listing technical jobs, and CareerBuilder.com boast 1.6 million jobs at the time of this writing. Jobcentral.com is another up and coming job search engine through which many job seekers are finding new careers. Yahoo’s ‘hotjobs’ site is also becoming a popular job search engine, in this recent economic slump. Craigslist.com is an excellent site to find both full-time employment and short gigs. These search engines all provide job searches by job title and location and are easy to use, both in the search and in your follow up.

In addition to thee large commercial job search engines, there are literally thousands of job search engines advertising jobs in a specialty. These list only jobs in the specialty, such as jobs in the health fields, in technology, in law, and in the emerging field of green jobs. Search on the specialty you’re interested in and the phrase, ‘job search’. With more than sixty-four million job search results, you’re bound to find the one that’s advertising your next job!

Keyboard ergonomics

August 11th, 2010

Use a computer? Keyboard ergonomics is something you want to learn about!

If you think of your computer as an electrical appliance, operating a computer without regard for health and safety is unthinkable. Certainly, you will treat it with the respect an electrical appliance deserves. But would you operate it, sit at your workstation, lift your arms into a position that lets you type on the computer’s keyboard, and just start typing, if you knew that by doing just that, you could be setting yourself up for many painful days, sleepless nights, increased sickness, and some hefty medical bills? Probably not!

However, it happens. Tendinitis and carpel tunnel syndrome have been associated to operating a computer without regard to what your posture when typing, seating position, as well as the typing itself, can do to your body. The body can only take so much stress before it begins to break down. Sitting in a stressful position, holding up your arms in a manner that stresses the shoulders and elbows, typing with hands unsupported, can all result in damage to your body and the subsequent pain.

The science of ergonomics studies, among other phenomena, the impact sitting, posturing for, and typing into a computer has on the body. These studies inform both manufacturers and computer users of disease prevention practices that should be observed when designing and operating a computer. As yet, no law requires manufacturers to comply with ergonomic requirements, although the U.S Department of Labor, the Office of Occupational Safety and Health Administration, researches, maintains and distributes ergonomic guidelines.

Keyboard ergonomics, for instance, has informed the computer user community of the need to relieve stress on their shoulders, arms, and wrist when typing at a computer. Keyboard ergonomics has also informed keyboard manufacturers of the design requirements for keyboards that relieve stress dangers to the keyboard users. The result of all this research is the ergonomic keyboard, a computer keyboard specifically designed to implement the recommendations of keyboard ergonomics.

Keyboard ergonomics recommends an adjustable keyboard tray, and many manufacturers of workstations now implement this recommendation. Some keyboards have adjustable feet to allow angling, just as keyboard ergonomics would have. Keyboard ergonomics gave rise to the padded keyboard tray. This was an early effort to keep the typist from bending the wrist, so often a main culprit in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Shortly afterwards, keyboard designers were designing keyboards with wrist pads on the keyboard. Recent developments have brought about split keyboards, each side attached to swivels that can adjust to the comfort of the typist’s hand angles.

While some manufacturers of consumer computers have voluntarily provided ergonomic keyboards with their computers, this is not yet a standard. Most people who want an ergonomic keyboard will have to purchase one separately. Fortunately, there are many manufacturers producing keyboards that implement keyboard ergonomics best practices. You can find them abundantly on the Internet. The more they say about their product, the more likely it is ergonomic. Compare the images. Imagine using each, how your hands would rest. Don’t let strange looking designs put you off. Keyboard ergonomics is not aesthetics. Get the one that looks like it will protect you best.

Keyboard ergonomics is but one of the ways computer users can protect themselves from the hazards of using a computer without regard for health and safety. You can see it’s worth your while to do a little detective work and assure yourself of a safe and healthy computer experience and prevent the painful consequences.

Making a Blockbuster – The Process

August 10th, 2010

What does the arrival of summer mean? Outdoor activities, vacations and of course, the movie season. But have you ever wondered how movies are made. What goes into making a blockbuster movie that rakes in millions of dollars? Taking into consideration production and marketing costs which amount into millions, making a profit on a film is not as easy as it sounds. One hurdle is the unpredictable public audience. As one professor of film studies said, the expectations of the public vary and there is no way of knowing exactly what they want at any given moment. Let’s take an imaginary tour of what goes around a studio script before it can be made into a blockbuster film.

In the movie business, preproduction is the groundwork of any movie and is probably the longest phase in the process. This process is the preparation stage and it begins with a story idea. A story can either be fictitious or based on real-life events. When a writer has come up with a storyline, he or she puts it down into a script. The script now becomes a screenplay and may undergo numerous revisions before it can be produced into a shooting script. The final version of the studio script will have the entire dialogue and other additional information such as the action descriptions in the movie as well as technical details guides with such things as transitions that have to be incorporated between scenes and the camera directions. While the studio script is still at this stage, it is sold to a producer.

It is now up to the producer to determine if the screenplay has potential and if he feels so, he signs up a reputable director and a famous actor or actress. The next stage is storyboarding. These are series of sketches that allow a cinematographer to know where to position the camera and it saves a lot of time during the actual shoot. Before this can be done, it will also have been determined what location to be used for filming, the interior sets to be used, costumes, lighting, makeup, sound effects and stunt work. A basic studio script can involve hundreds of people as is seen in the closing credits of the film. As one technician put it, “It takes a city of people to make a feature film.”

The next step is putting all that is on the script on film. The director closely supervises the filming of each scene. Even relatively simple scenes may take an entire day to film. Each attempt at a scene is called a take and for big scenes, it is not surprising to have up to 50 takes at the end of the shooting day. In all, it is easy to see why a movie can take up to months to film. The final leg is the postproduction of the studio script which includes addition of sound and visual effects. The film may be shown to a test audience which may include the director’s friends and colleagues before being released to theaters. So the next time you line up outside the theater to watch your favorite upcoming movie, consider what it may have taken to piece it up together.

Small Group Tours to Great Destinations

August 9th, 2010

In our gregarious society, it can be a bit embarrassing for a single person to do certain things solo. For instance, whenever I head to a restaurant at dinnertime by myself, I’m bound to get some odd looks from the waiter or other diners. The looks range from simply inquisitive to downright pitying, which makes me even more self-conscious than I was when I first walked in. The same thing happens when I attend a movie or a sporting event all alone. And I used to get similar stares at famous sightseeing spots until I started booking small group tours.

There are a couple different kinds of small group tours available. The first kind is for groups of people who already know each other, such as family members, friends, or schoolmates, but this obviously isn’t the one that applies to me. The second kind caters to singles who don’t wish to travel alone to great destinations across the country and around the world. These types of small group tours give individuals the opportunity to visit the best that our planet has to offer in a safe and comfortable setting.

Small group tours have been around forever, but I first heard about them a few years ago after a colleague of mine suggested I look into them. I had just returned from a trip to Paris, and was complaining of how awkward it was to visit that kind of romantic locale on my own. The worst was asking people to take a picture of me standing in front of Notre Dame or the Eiffel Tower, as I received more of those pitying looks that I’ve grown so accustomed to over the years. I know, I know — as an adult, these situations shouldn’t bother me. But they do, which is why I absolutely love small group tours now.

Small group tours can be arranged through most travel agencies, and include a number of benefits in addition to getting new traveling companions every time. For one thing, groups are often eligible for the best rates around, which means I actually end up saving money by booking this way. For another thing, all the details of the trip are pre-arranged. This includes transportation at the destination, a sightseeing itinerary (that often includes free days as well), and even meals. Plus, small group tours come with a guide who is knowledgeable about the destination and speaks the local language. That’s a huge advantage when journeying to far-flung places like China, Thailand, or various countries in Africa. There’s no way I would be able to navigate through those countries on my own.

I have been part of these small group tours for my last six vacations, and I have had terrific experiences each and every time. The accommodations were amazing, the packages were very affordable, and the companionship was wonderful. It’s so nice not to be on the receiving end of those sad-sack looks anymore that I can’t imagine traveling any other way!

Treatments for Depression

August 8th, 2010

Clinical psychology classes and pamphlets about depression will tell you that treatments for depression are widely available and that they can be highly effective. Treatments for depression include medication, counseling and other kinds of therapy. It’s often said that a combination of medication and therapy proves to be the best treatment.

Antidepressant drugs are prescribed to enhance the mood of people with depression. Most antidepressants work by slowing down the reuptake of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that travel through the neurons in our brains. When neurons are done sending neurotransmitters, they bring them back inside. Antidepressants keep neurotransmitters related to mood working longer so that mood increases. It’s important to realize that antidepressants don’t work by taking away depression. Instead, it’s more like they lift you up so that the symptoms can improve.

Therapy is the other option for treating depression. Most people think of Freud and psychoanalysis, and while a form of it exists today, psychoanalysis in its original form is debunked and no longer practiced. The one element of Freud that remains is that therapy tries to get into the underlying causes of your problems. A common form of therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which aims to treat the distorted thinking of depression patients so that they can change behavior that perpetuates their depression. By meeting with a therapist on a regular basis, patients can conceptualize what they’re feeling and going through and learn to cope with it.

Treatments for depression do work for people, but treating depression isn’t always as simple or effective as it might seem. For one thing, medication and therapy can cost a lot of money. Insurance helps decrease the cost, but the fees for your antidepressant refills accumulate especially if you’re going to take them for the rest of your life, and therapy can cost up to a little over $100 per session if you’re seeing a therapist at their private practice. There are also negative side effects for at least the first month while taking antidepressants, and it’s not guaranteed to work. Sometimes patients have to switch around to figure out which one helps them. Therapy can be effective if it’s consistent but patients have to find the therapist that’s right for them, which can be difficult.

Another issue with treatments for depression is that treatment is contingent upon the patient seeking it for themselves. The patient is responsible for getting their prescriptions and monitoring their intake, and therapy will only work if the patient is willing to participate. The problem is that depression can debilitate you and make you not want to do these things. This is where outside support can come in. Treatments for depression don’t all have to be professional. Friends and family who are supportive and understanding can do a lot for people with depression.

It’s never certain whether treatments for depression will work or not because everyone is different—they have different experiences, different problems, and different biological makeup and so on. Everyone has to pick the treatment that’s right for them, but figuring out which treatments for depression will work for you can be a challenge.

Wedding Favor Ideas

August 7th, 2010

We can all agree that weddings are stressful. For some people, wedding planning is the most stressful event in their lives. The venue, the dress, the guest list, the menu, the music, flowers, cake. There’s a lot to keep in mind. Nowadays, on top of all that, you’re supposed to come up with original and charming wedding favor ideas. But wedding favor ideas can be difficult – how many personalized shot glasses, candles or coasters have you seen? Not to worry. There are some wedding favor ideas that will work perfectly for your wedding, and can hopefully make all of the wedding planning less stressful.

Of course, the key to good wedding favor ideas is to personalize. This should come as no surprise. There are a number of web sites that offer plenty of personalized wedding favor ideas. The problem of course with many personalized wedding favor ideas is how expensive the personalization is. You end up paying a lot for just a couple of words and a date. There’s gotta be a better way! Well, personalized wedding favor ideas could be done yourself instead of forcing some “professional” to do it. You can save a lot of money, as personalizing technologies are becoming increasingly available to consumers and affordable as well.

Something you might want to remember is that no one goes to the wedding to take something home with them other than a warm feeling and lasting memories. To that end, you might want to consider wedding favor ideas that aren’t tangible or physical. For instance, perhaps instead if you and your fiancee have a preferred charity, you could make a small donation in each person’s name to that charity. These sorts of wedding favor ideas remind everyone that weddings, love and gift-giving shouldn’t be about material possessions. Hokey, I know but I would never feel snubbed if the wedding favor ideas the bride and groom had in mind meant going home “empty-handed”.

No matter what wedding favor ideas you consider, think about wedding favors even stand for. You want everyone to have some sort of memento, or representation of their part and participation in your relationship. Wedding favors are an acknowledgement that you and your fiancee aren’t in a bubble by yourselves, but part of a larger community of friends and families. Whatever your wedding favor ideas are, they should reflect something about you as a couple, and that doesn’t just mean your names.

1950s clothing style

August 7th, 2010

1950s clothing style was very diverse. There were conservative values spread across the country but many young people chose to rebel and express themselves by dressing as “greasers” or pin-up girls. This decade was popular for exaggerating female and male attributes.

1950s clothing style is captured in a few pieces, some of them still widely used today including: the cashmere sweater, neck scarf, poodle skirt, leather jacket, cat eye glasses and pedal pushers. These clothes were fun to wear and kids took advantage of the easy access they had to them.

The poodle skirt was popular in 1950s clothing style. The skirt got its name not from the shape or design of it but from the poodle featured on each one. Whether embodied or patched, the iconic poodle could by seen toward the bottom of the hemline.

The cashmere sweater was a very luxurious item back in the 1950s. Cashmere, wool from a goat, and was imported to America. They could only be found in special boutiques and great care was taken to maintain them. Now, cashmere sweater, scarves and dresses are found in a variety of specialty and department stores and come in many colors and styles.

Cat eyeglasses were a huge part of women’s 1950s clothing style. Very fashion forward thinking women and some men wore the thick-framed glasses throughout the 1950’s. Even celebrities wore these glasses onstage and in films. They are still worn totally but the frames are more neutral, either black or tortoise, without the embellishments and bright colors.

Leather jackets will never go out of style. In 1950s clothing style, they were black and sometimes fitted. Most young men wore them with the collars turned up. Now leather is worn is a variety of colors and faux leather materials are available to cost the cost of high style.

Pedal pushers are iconic throughout the 1950s because the shorter pants originally used for cycling became a popular and comfortable fashion staple for many young women. Made from denim of cotton and often paired with flat shoes, they helped tie together a look that was very easy to wear.

America embraced materialism during the 1950’s and this shone through the clothing people chose to wear. In the 1940s, clothing had to be simple and useful but in the 1950s, with new homes being built and businesses expanding, it was acceptable for people to spend more time and money clothing themselves.

The Joy of Planting Trees

July 31st, 2010

There have always been things that define our childhoods. For me, one of those things were trees. I lived in a rural area, and spent much of my off school time running around with my friends. What was great about where we lived was that there were plenty of neighbors, but we had a sprawling forest behind us. We lived at the base of a mountain, and felt very safe in that area. To this day, those memories always make me want to go about planting trees so there are always plenty of them around.

The trees I remember were all around me. I always loved them because they were a form of entertainment all in their own. We didn’t have to have a lot to be lost in play all day long. We could climb them, build forts near them, and pick up the nuts some of them dropped on the ground. They were useful for everything a child could imagine. Planting trees was never something I thought about, as there were plenty where I lived, but I would soon learn how important planting trees really is to our environment.

The only time I thought of planting trees back then was when it was done as a memorial. There is one that was planted in the memory of my cousin when he died. It is a pine tree located near his elementary school and is growing strong today. It is a nice reminder of a life that was way to short. There are many people who choose to go planting trees in the memory of someone that they lost. This works better if you own the land, but there are alternatives that work well so the tree can remain without being bothered or cut down.

When I got older I became friends with a boy who was to inherit his father’s logging company. I learned that they were planting a few new trees for each one that was cut down. At the time, I don’t think this was a requirement as much as it was a suggestion, but they did it anyway. They were a small family business and they appreciated that the trees they cut down should be replaced, and felt lucky that they had the supply that they did. Planting trees was just something that they did, without or without the need to do so.

Now that global warming is on the minds of more and more people, we can all think of small things that we can do to make the world a better place. Simple things like energy efficient light bulbs are great, as are things like planting trees. Some people think that just doing one small thing won’t make much of a difference, but it adds up when everyone does something. Planting trees on your property or on community land (with permission, of course) can go a long way towards making a difference. Not only do they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, they are beautiful and peaceful, which is always welcome.

Tofu Recipes

July 30th, 2010

Tofu is a popular dish originating in China that can thought of as the healthy, soy bean-based equivalent of cheese. Since then consumption of tofu has spread to the majority of Asia and to other geographic locations as well. Tofu likely has achieved its acclaimed status because not only is it healthy, it is also a versatile dish that can be prepared in many different ways. It is low in calories and fat, rich in iron, and it can be eaten savory, sweet or even plain. Tofu easily lends itself as an addition to many dishes because it doesn’t have a strong flavor to begin with. Tofu’s versatility has given rise to an abundance of tofu recipes that incorporate all sorts of ingredients and make use of tofu according to its texture. Fresh tofu comes in 3 basic textures: soft, silken and firm.

The classification that tofu falls into depends on how much water has been retained. The more water that’s retained, the softer the tofu will be. Silken tofu is the softest, and it’s often used in both entrée and dessert tofu recipes. You can add some soft or silken tofu to a stew, season it with soy sauce, or use it as the base of a pudding. If you want your tofu recipes to contain tofu that retains more of its shape or thickness, you should use firm tofu. Firm tofu can be cooked to look, taste and feel like meat and it’s often used as a meat substitute. Its firmness also lends itself well to heavier desserts like cheesecake. Firm tofu is also good for fried tofu recipes since it won’t fall apart during the frying process as easily as softer tofu will.

Tofu can be enhanced with various flavorings. Sweet fruit and sugar flavorings or savory egg and spice are a couple examples of flavorings that can be added during the tofu making process. Flavored tofu can already be a dish on its own, or it can be used to compliment other dishes. Tofu recipes can also make use of tofu by-products like tofu skin and tofu pulp. Tofu skin can be sliced and served as an alternative to noodles, and tofu pulp can be used as a component of soup.

While tofu is widely enjoyed, it sometimes suffers from a reputation of being bland or inferior to “regular” ingredients, but tofu recipes are anything but bland and they show that tofu can be the star of the dish. You’ll also never get bored with tofu recipes because there are so many of them to try!

Should You Get International Travel Insurance?

July 29th, 2010

Everyone has a hankering at one point or another to travel abroad. Seeing other parts of the world is a great and unparalleled experience. When I first went to Italy, someone told me to get international travel insurance. Only a student at the time (a young, foolish student at that), I declined. Luckily, nothing happened. But now that I’m a little older and wiser, I’ve discovered that international travel insurance is not the scam or money drain it appears to be.

The best thing that international travel insurance will grant you is a little piece of mind. OK, OK, that sounds like some pretty goopy sales pitch. But keep in mind, you are traveling to a different country. When I drive to a different state, the different symbols and signs and names and places disorient me enough not to want to do it more often. And that’s in a place where they drive on the same side of the road and use the same measurement units, let alone the same language. This is all a long way of saying that being in a new and foreign country can be discomforting and alarming. Having international travel insurance makes it less so.

There are some very practical situations that having international travel insurance can help with. International travel encounters many paradoxes, for lack of a better term. Let’s say you need to find an English speaking doctor. In Portugal, it’d help to speak Portuguese. But if you spoke Portuguese, you wouldn’t need an English speaking doctor. Another example is if you lose your passport. Just go to your Emaessy, right? But you can’t get in the Embassy without a passport. International travel insurance helps fix these paradoxes and get you out of tricky situations that are much more common than you would think. And that’s not including its ability to recoup nonrefundable costs in delays and cancellations, and help with emergency medical care. Having international travel insurance is very much like having a guardian angel when you are a stranger in a strange land.

Traveling abroad was one of the best experiences of my life. Seeing France and Italy were totally the transformative and eye-opening and delightful experience everyone had told me it would be. Looking back, there were some dangerously close calls, like the ones mentioned above. Now that I understand the great benefits better, I can give you my personal opinion that in my future travels I will definitely search for the right international travel insurance package for me.
